The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Cornersville High School Lady Bulldogs 3-0 on the road Tuesday in their first game of the season.
The Lady Hornets took an early lead and maintained control of the ball for most of the game to open up their season with a district victory.
Huntland head soccer coach Scott Worthington said he was happy with the victory and surprised by how well his team was able to maintain possession throughout the contest.
“I was very surprised at how well they possessed the ball and played the ball,” Worthington said. “Our touches are still a little brutal sometimes, but, overall, I was very pleased.”
Katherine Clark got the Lady Hornets on the board early in the first half with a goal off of a corner kick from Carley Rigsby.
They led 1-0 at halftime.
The lead would be doubled six minutes into the second half when Katelyn Carr broke through and found the back of the net to make it 2-0.
Clark notched her second goal of the day with 15 minutes remaining in the contest as she weaved through the defense before firing a ball past the opposing goalkeeper to bring the final lead up to three.
The Bulldogs had limited scoring opportunities throughout the game with Huntland goalkeeper Megan Tipps and the rest of the Huntland defense securing the shutout.
With the win, the Lady Hornets started off their new campaign with a record of 1-0.
They will next play Tuesday at Marshall County High School. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
