NASHVILLE – After a disappointing start to the 2019 season, the Sycamore War Eagles came out with a vengeance on Thursday night and took out some frustration on Hunters Lane in a 17-0 shutout victory.

Grady McPherson took a 43-yard run to the house early in the second quarter to make the score 10-0 after an Antonio Jardinez field goal gave the War Eagles a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The War Eagles took the 10-0 lead into halftime and then took the opening possession of the second half for a touchdown as well.

McPherson found Tyler Niebel up the middle on a third and long to get the first down, but McPherson went down with an injury  on the next play.

“Grady is a tough kid, he should be fine for the next game,” Sycamore coach Justin Robison said. “We had a good lead, and our defense was playing well, so we just kept him out after that for precautionary reasons.”

The next play after McPherson went down, Tyler Niebel stepped up and took an off-tackle run up the sideline for a 30-yard touchdown scamper. Jardinez then made it a 17-0 lead with the extra point to wrap the scoring.

“We did some good things, but we still aren’t where we need to be execution-wise, especially on offense,” Robison added. “Defensively, I thought we played fairly well, but we missed too many tackles. But it was nice to see us get some takeaways. It was nice to see some young guys come in and step up for whatever reason, whether we were giving a guy a break or an injury or whatever those guys stepped in, and of course, we got the win, which is the most important thing.”

Robison said he was especially thrilled to see his defense hold Hunters Lane scoreless.

“One thing we always preach is playing well defensively,” Robison stated. “We pitched a shutout, so that’s really important.”

Sycamore will host Stewart County next week on Friday, Sept. 6. That game is the War Eagles’ home opener and will begin at 7:30 p.m.

“I’m glad we were able to bounce back after a tough loss last week,” Robison exclaimed. “We shot ourselves in the foot and had a few questionable calls, but that’s in the past. Seeing us bounce back and fight to get a win was good to see.”
