In a back-and-forth battle between two Division II-AAA powers, McCallie travelled to Brentwood Friday night and used a late score on a 15 yard run by Gavin Cagle with 46 seconds left in the contest to upset number one ranked Brentwood Academy, 28-23.
The Blue Tornado was led by quarterback DeAngelo Hardy’s two TDs and 134 rushing yards. Hardy also accounted for 114 passing yards and another touchdown via an 19 yard scoring strike to Thompson Byrd. Byrd had seven catches for 80 yards.
McCallie drew first blood on a 12 yard run Hardy with 4:47 to go in the first stanza, but less than 3 minutes later Brentwood Academy was on the board when Paxton Perry booted a 32 yard field goal.
The two teams traded scores in the second quarter with the Blue Tornado taking a 14-10 lead at the half on scores by Hardy and Thompson Byrd. Brentwood’s Jordan James electrified the crowd with a 92 yard kickoff return for a score.
Brentwood took its first lead of the contest at 23-22 with 5:29 to go when James scored from the one, however a try for a two-point conversion failed.
McCallie sealed the upset with just 46 seconds remaining in the game on Gavin Cagle’s 15 yard scamper around end. Hardy’s attempted rush for a two point conversion failed and the Eagle’s pass from the Blue Tornado nine fell incomplete on the game’s final play.
McCallie outgained Brentwood in total offense 463 yards to 384.
