Area sports notes: Patriots' Chase Faudi wins big Knoxville meet

Chattanooga Patriots senior Chase Faudi won Saturday's Cherokee Classic high school cross country meet at Sequoyah Hills Park in Knoxville. In a field of 351 competitors, Faudi, a two-time Times Free Press Best of Preps athlete, took first place with a time of 16:00.18 for five kilometers (3.1 miles). Chattanooga Christian School senior Edimo Ninterestse was second overall in 16:27.05, helping the Chargers to a third-place team finish. CCS trailed only Independence High and Farragut, while six-time Division II state champion Brentwood Academy placed seventh. Baylor's boys finished 10th, and the Patriots were 11th. Also among the top 30 individual finishers were Baylor's Xian Campbell (15th), CCS's Alexander Bastnagel (23th) and Chase Manton (24th) and the Patriots' Eli Moran (28th).

* Led by freshman Helen Webb, the Baylor girls finished 10th out of 33 teams in the Chickasaw Trails meet in Danville, Alabama.

Football

* Austin Emery ran for three touchdowns, passed for two and even kicked the last extra point as Southwestern University of Georgetown, Texas, ruined the start of Sewanee's 125th year of football by defeating the host Tigers 47-7. Sewanee scored on a 24-yard pass from Alex Darras to Colin May in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Darras, a Notre Dame High School graduate, was 17-of-33 for 175 yards, with three interceptions, and Micah Maes caught four passes for 69 yards. The Pirates dominated 31-13 in first downs, 520-206 in offensive yards and 331-22 in net rushing.

Golf

* Georgia Tech took a 12-stroke lead Saturday in the 15-team Carpet Capital Collegiate tournament at The Farm Golf Club in Rocky Face, Georgia, with a 285 after Friday's 284. Those are the two best rounds of the event. The third-best 289 moved Alabama up to third at 585, four shots behind North Florida. The University of Tennessee climbed from 12th to 10th at 598, and UT-Chattanooga is 14th at 613. The Mocs had Will Porter at 152, A.J. Lintunen and Moritz Lammel at 153 and Matt Smith at 155. Georgia Tech's Luke Schniederjans built a seven-stroke individual lead at 135.

* Dalton resident Eric Sharp was tied for third at par 72 after the first round Saturday of the Georgia Public Links Championship at Stonebridge Golf Club in Rome. Atlanta's Chris Waters, the 2014 and 2016 champion, took a five-shot lead at 66. Cedartown's Beau Gammage was second.

Volleyball

* UTC lost 3-1 to Jacksonville in the Troy Invitational on Saturday and is 2-5 for the season. The set scores were 25-21, 22-25, 25-17, 25-15. Junior setter Bailey Bennett had her first double-double as a Moc with 33 assists and 11 digs, while Maia Rackel had 12 kills, Brianna Anderson 10 kills, 12 digs and four aces, Gylian Finch nine kills and 11 digs, Dani Szczepanski nine kills and Megan Kaufman 15 digs.

* Quinne Daoust had 10 kills in each match and Hanna Matthews set 26 and 27 assists as Lee University began its season Saturday with 3-0 home wins over Kentucky State (25-13, 25-17, 25-11 ) and Erskine (25-19, 25-15, 25-12). Micaela McMichen had 13 and 10 digs for Lee, and Abby Stroh had seven kills and five aces in the first win. Hannah Upton and Matthews served four and three aces against Erskine.

* Bryan improved to 7-3 overall and 2-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with a 3-0 defeat (25-22, 25-12, 25-22) of visiting Bluefield as Anna Owens had seven kills, Gigi Ford six kills and 12 digs, Rheagan Kean 17 digs, Sidney Pierce and Jaleigh Rogan 12 and 10 assists and Macenzie Krause four aces.

* Covenant dropped to 0-6 with 3-0 losses to both top-ranked Emory (25-19, 25-14, 25-21) and Rhodes (25-15, 25-22, 26-24) at the Berry National Invitational. Emily Moore totaled 21 assists, Riley Howe 20 digs and four aces and Meriel Chupp 12 kills in the two defeats.

Soccer

* Lee University began its men's soccer season Saturday night with a 1-0 home win over Embry-Riddle. Owen Keck scored the goal from an Eemeli Makela assist 28:37 into the match, and the Flames led 8-3 in shots and 3-0 in shots on goal. Division II's sixth-ranked Lee women lost 3-0 at No. 1 Grand Valley State and are 1-1 after their season-opening trip to Michigan.

* The Sewanee and Covenant men tied 1-1 through two overtimes in the Kyle Rote Jr. Invitational. Thompson Schollaert scored from an Austin Young assist at 8:31 for host Sewanee (2-1-1); Josh Brower scored at 75:36 from Anthony Buzzeo for the Scots (3-0-1), who got seven saves from Paul Lemay to counter James Murray's six.

* The Covenant women lost 5-4 to visiting Salem (2-1), which scored twice in the final five minutes. Kyra Duble netted two goals for the Lady Scots (0-2-1); Anna Robertson and Hannah Rodehaver scored their first two, and Lizzy Hightower had two assists.

General

* UTC soccer coach Gavin McKinney and deputy athletic director Scott Altizer will be guest speakers for the Chattanooga Quarterback Club's noon luncheon meeting Monday at the Chattanooga Masonic Center across the street from Finley Stadium. Altizer will give an update on UTC facilities projects. Attendance costs $10 with a meal, $4 without, and parking is free. The public is welcome.
