For Maryville coach Derek Hunt, he's always coached his team with a next-man-up mentality. That wasn't going to change Thursday night when Maryville traveled to Alcoa for the 91st meeting between the two powerhouses.

Maryville was without running back Tee Hodge, a Tennessee commitment, because of turf toe suffered in his right foot in Week 3.

No Hodge. No problem.

Marvyille beat Alcoa, 17-3, ending the Tornadoes 29-game win streak and avenging its loss from last season. Maryville junior running back Parker McGill scored the game's first touchdown — a four-yard run — with 10:52 in the fourth quarter.

Maryville extended its lead, and slammed the door on another win in this rivalry, when, with under two minutes left, quarterback Cade Chambers scored the Rebels' second touchdown. Senior wide receiver AJ Davis converted the two-point conversion.

After Chambers crossed the end zone, fans on Alcoa's side leaving. Alcoa had outscored its last two opponents 84-0 and was averaging over 35 points a game this season. But the Tornadoes failed to score a touchdown in the game and had their lowest score in the rivalry since 2013, when they only scored 2.

Alcoa coach Gary Rankin, the state's all-time leader in wins with 428, was trying to beat Maryville for the second-straight year, something he hasn't done since 2009-10. His team couldn't. Maryville now leads the all-time series 63-25-3.

Alcoa forced four Marvyille turnovers — three fumbles and one interception — but the Tornadoes couldn't capitalize off either turnover.
