Franklin County's Ashtin Holman prepares to serve the ball during a game Tuesday against Warren County High School. The Rebelettes would go on lose the match in straight sets.
The Franklin County Rebelettes lost to the Warren County High School Lady Pioneers in straight sets at home Tuesday for their 21st loss of the season.
The Rebelettes nearly won the first set, but lost decisively in the following two frames as they were not able to avoid a sweep at home.
Franklin County head volleyball coach Alveda Gaines said the match came down to a consistency issue that has continually plagued her players throughout the season.
“The first set actually gave me some hope that we could play with this team,” Gaines said. “The only thing that changed was the way we played. (Warren County) played the exact same. We just did not come ready to play.”
The Rebelettes took an early 10-4 lead in the opening set and held a 22-21 edge late in the series. However, the Lady Pioneers scored the last four points of the set to win it by a score of 25-22.
The second set would be completely dominated by the Lady Pioneers as the Rebelettes scored just eight points before losing the frame by a score of 25-8.
The Rebelettes traded points with their opponent early in the third set, but another big run by the Lady Pioneers would put them in a massive hole. The Lady Pioneers finished off the sweep with a 25-10 victory in the third set.
Gaines said the most important thing for her team at this point is for a player to step up and be a true leader on the court.
“I have a lack of leadership. Nobody wants to take leadership. Nobody wants to take ownership,” Gaines said. “I need somebody to step up and be a leader on this team.”
With the loss, the Rebels moved to 6-21 on the season.
They will next play Thursday at Columbia Central High School. The match is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m.
