Down by five points to start the second half of Friday night's Division II-AA East Region football game at Silverdale Baptist, Boyd Buchanan needed a spark.
The Seahawks had scored with six seconds left in the first half to take the lead from the Buccaneers, taking all the momentum with them.
However, the Bucs got the needed spark right from the beginning of the third quarter in the form of Caden Johnson. The freshman took the ball 90 yards to the end zone on the opening kickoff, giving Boyd Buchanan a one-point lead. The Bucs later added to their advantage and held on to win 34-25.
"The way we came out (in the second half) and played aggressive and not backing down pumps us up," Boyd Buchanan coach Jeremy Bosken said. "That was a freshman with two touchdowns tonight. We're just excited about the development of the young kids."
The Seahawks (1-5, 0-4) had opportunities in the second half to pull back ahead, but they fumbled four times in the half, including three of their final four possessions. All four of those fumbles happened in Bucs territory.
"I know there are missed blocks and stuff like that, but we have to reduce our mistakes," Seahawks coach Al Rogers said. "That's the most turnovers we have had all season in a game."
Boyd Buchanan (5-1, 2-1) scored 14 points off those turnovers in the second half, sealing the game with two touchdown runs from David Dixon.
It looked to be the Eli Evans show early in the first half for Boyd Buchanan. One play after intercepting a Seahawks pass, he threw a 40-yard pass on a wide-receiver reverse, setting up a 2-yard touchdown run for the game's first points.
However, it was the Seahawks who took advantage of turnovers next as they recovered a Boyd Buchanan fumble on the Bucs' 26-yard line. The Seahawks wasted no time cashing in as Wade Jewell connected with Connor Delashmitt for a 26-yard touchdown pass.
The Bucs adjusted on defense in the second half, though, holding the Seahawks to just six points - a touchdown run on the last play of the game.
"We're just so pumped that this rivalry has returned back to the blue side," Bosken said, "and we're going to enjoy it for the next 365 days."
