Football - Lipscomb Academy at CPA Catch

Despite one of the toughest schedules in the state, CPA travels to FRA Friday night for a contest that will determine the  Division II, Class AA, Middle Region championship. Hopefully the Lions won’t need the kind of heroic plays, like this one-handed scoring grab by junior wide receiver Maverick Rodriguez against Lipscomb Academy.

A defensive gym guided Christ Presbyterian Academy to the top of the Division II-AA Middle Region standings on Friday.

With region-leading Lipscomb Academy (4-2, 2-1) visiting, the Lions (2-5, 2-0) turned up the pressure, limiting the high-powered Mustangs to only a touchdown in a 28-7 win.

Lipscomb Academy, under first-year head coach Trent Dilfer, the former NFL Super Bowl-winning quarterback, went into the night having outscored opponents 223-102 in six games. It’s scored at least 56 points three times this season, including a 63-21 win over Goodpasture two weeks ago in its last outing.

That offense didn’t show up on Friday.

CPA allowed the Mustangs a second-quarter touchdown then slammed the door, scoring the last 21 points in the ballgame to snatch victory.

It was the second win in three weeks for the Lions, who started the season 0-4.

They were led offensively by a strong ground game, accounting for 247 of their 328 total yards. Running back Tyler Reed spearheaded the attack with 126 rushing yards and a touchdown, and quarterback Cade Law added two rushing scores and 64 yards on the ground.

The defending state champion Lions will go out of region play next week in a meeting with Ravenwood, the third Region 6-6A team they’ve faced this season, on senior night. They’ll then hit the road for the last two games of the regular season, sandwiched around a bye week.

Brentwood Academy

Brentwood Academy had a chance to show the nation what they were made of on the gridiron Thursday, but it couldn’t take advantage with a win.

The Eagles (5-2, 1-2) traveled to Knoxville Catholic (4-2, 1-2) to take on the Fighting Irish on ESPN2 and couldn’t hold the home team down, losing 42-37.

It was a back-and-forth affair, but Knoxville Catholic pulled away with a touchdown late in the fourth quarter to widen its lead to 42-31.

Brentwood Academy added a touchdown in the waning seconds, but it proved too little, too late.

The Eagles’ schedule doesn’t get much easier from here, as they’ll travel to rival MBA next week before a bye, then finish with home games against Ensworth and Baylor.

Ensworth 42, Father Ryan 7

A tough season got a little tougher for Father Ryan Friday, falling on the road at region foe Ensworth 42-7.

The Irish (1-6, 0-3) have now lost six in a row after an opening 24-21 win over Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Things don’t get easier, as Father Ryan travels to region leader McCallie next week.

Friendship Christian 55, Grace Christian Academy 7

Grace Christian Academy stayed winless on the season Friday with a 55-7 defeat at the hands of Friendship Christian.

The Lions are now 0-7 this season and have won just once in their last 16 games. GCA was coming off a 38-34 loss last week and a season-high in points.
