GRAY—It took Jefferson County two sets to get going Tuesday night and, by then, it was too late as the Lady Patriots fell to Dobyns-Bennett, 3-0, in the first round of the Region 1-AAA Volleyball Tournament at Daniel Boone’s Bobby Snyder Gymnasium.
The Lady Indians took quick control in the first two sets rolling to easy wins, then had to battle like crazy to win the third as Jefferson County finally got its offense on track.
Dobyns-Bennett took the opening set 25-11 and came right back with a 25-13 romp in the second. In the final set, the Lady Patriots led as late as 23-22 before the Lady Indians scored the final three points to close it out.
The Lady Indians then knocked off Daniel Boone in the championship match. Dobyns-Bennett won 25-17, 26-24, 18-15 and 25-17 to capture the title.
With the win, Dobyns-Bennett, now 21-8 for the season, will now host Knox West in Thursday’s sectional round.
Jefferson County saw its season come to an end with a 22-10 record and the school’s first ever district tournament championship.
Power-hitting Hannah Watson led the Lady Indians with 17 kills including eight in the second set. Sithney Wolfe added eight and Staley Humphries collected seven.
The Lady Patriots never got much going offensively as almost half of their points (23 of 47) came on Dobyns-Bennett hitting mistakes, serving errors or violations.
Abby Blankenship’s five kills topped Jefferson County.
Jefferson County coach Torey Yocom was obviously disappointed. “The first two sets, we just did not play the kind of volleyball we played last week in winning the district. We played much better in the last game.”
“Starting out, our serve receive was nowhere near what it needed to be,” she said. “We were not taking good swings on offense and we weren’t making smart plays. We were trying to tip the ball when we were five feet off the net and they would fall below the net.”
Yocom added, “We just didn’t hit the ball the way we had been hitting it.
“In the third set, we played volleyball like we normally do. I think if we had started like that we could have taken them.”
The coach said her team had a good season. “I’m really proud of my seniors. These girls have already accomplished so much.
“They’ve played a lot of volleyball together, and I think that helped us be a good team. We will really miss them next season.”
It was the final match for Cami Mincey, Makayla Alvey, Kristin Mutterspaugh, Anne-Elizabeth Huffaker and Harley Shumaker.
After a kill by Watson got the Lady Indians started, Rylee Waye served a pair of aces before Jefferson County got on the scoreboard on a serving error.
However, Dobyns-Bennett got two more kills from Watson and one from Sarah Moore for a quick 7-1 lead. Jefferson County closed within 9-5 on a kill by Bella Webb but committed four straight hitting errors to go down by eight.
Blankenship and Alvey had kills and the Lady Patriots were within 15-8 but that was as close as they would get. The winners reeled off a 7-1 run and won the set going away.
Watson put on a display to start the second game. She hammered three kills and blocked a shot for another point as Dobyns-Bennett ran off to a 6-0 lead.
That was still the margin after a kill by Blankenship got the Lady Patriots within 18-12. But the Lady Indians closed the set on a 7-1 run.
Jefferson County started the final set a point down after a penalty for delay but scored the first three actual points and led 6-5 when two kills apiece for Watson and Wolfe put Dobyns-Bennett in front.
But this time, the Lady Patriots bounced back with five straight points as Mincey found an open spot to score and Mutterspaugh served an ace for an 11-10 lead. Sidney Keck and Wolfe traded kills before a serving error and kill by Humphries tied the score.
Blankenship put away two kills, and the Lady Indians had two hitting errors as Jefferson County opened a 17-14 lead.
It stayed close and was tied at 19, 20 and 21 before a net violation put the winners in front. Keck tied it with a kill and a Shumaker kill gave the Lady Patriots their final point and a 23-22 lead.
But Humphries smacked down a kill, the Lady Patriots were called for a double hit and Watson had one final kill to end the match.
