Top Week 11 high school football games: Montgomery Central, Rossview must win to make playoffs

Clarksville Leaf-Chronicle

We're down to the final week of the high school football regular season with several key games that will determine whether some Clarksville area teams make the postseason.

Kenwood, West Creek, Montgomery Central and Rossview are all still in the hunt for playoff berths. Here is a look at Week 11's top games, players and predictions.

Game of the week

White House-Heritage (6-3, 2-3 5-4A) at Montgomery Central (7-2, 3-2)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

Montgomery Central was rolling through another outstanding season, but its 27-17 loss to White House last week threw a wrench into its plans.

Montgomery Central must win Friday to advance to the 4A playoffs. Not many schools win seven games and miss the playoffs. But the Indians face that possibility.

But if Central knocks off White House-Heritage Friday, it will wrap up the No. 2 playoff sport and earn a home playoff game.

How?

Montgomery Central's Taven Taylor (28) and Montgomery Central's Ashton Ward (35) celebrate after the Indians recovered a fumble by Springfield at a TSSAA football game between the Montgomery Central Indians and Springfield Yellowjackets at Montgomery Central High School in Cunningham, Tenn., on Friday, Oct. 11, 2019.

If the Indians lose they would be in a three-way tie for third in Region 5-4A with Portland and White House Heritage, and the top four teams in each region make the playoffs. Because Montgomery Central would have losses to both those teams, it would finish fifth and miss the postseason.

But if the Indians win they would tie for second with the loser of the Creek Wood-Springfield game. Because Central beat both of those teams it would get the No. 2 seed.

Robinson's pick: Montgomery Central 34, White House-Heritage 27

Lebanon (4-5, 2-2 4-6A) at Rossview (4-5, 1-3)

When: 7 p.m. Friday

If the Hawks beat Lebanon, they'll get the No. 4 seed in Region 4-6A and make the postseason. But if they lose, they'll miss the playoffs for the first time since 2015.  Lebanon has lost two straight, including a 23-22 loss to Wilson Central last week. But the Blue Devils have a win over Hendersonville, 21-20. Rossview lost to the Commandos 48-21 last Friday.

Robinson's pick: Lebanon 35, Rossview 24

West Creek (4-5, 1-4 7-5A) at Clarksville  (5-4, 3-2)

Clarksville High's Quantae Hicks (5) finds some space to run against Kenwood's defense during their high school football game Thursday, Oct. 10, 2019.

When: 7 p.m., Friday

West Creek is on the outside of the playoff race but has a chance. If the Coyotes upset Clarksville — and Dyer County takes care of Kenwood — and finish in a three-way tie with Kenwood and Northeast, West Creek would win the tiebreaker based on best overall record and take the final spot.

However, Northwest (3-6, 1-4) could create a different scenario if it somehow upsets fifth-ranked Henry County — a team that hasn't lost to a Clarksville school since 2012.

if there’s a four-way tie at 2-4 between West Creek, Northeast, Northwest and Kenwood,  West Creek is eliminated because the Knights and Eagles would be 2-1 against those teams while the Vikings and Coyotes would be 1-2.

Robinson's pick: Clarksville 28, West Creek 14

Last week: 3-1

Season record: 21-10 (.677)

Players to watch

LaKendriez Sanders, Montgomery Central: Sanders had a season-high 224 yards rushing last week but it came in a loss to White House. The past two games, Sanders has run it 80 times.

Yahsir Thomas, West Creek: Thomas can hurt a defense with his running and pass catching ability.

Quantae Hicks, Clarksville: Hicks may be the fastest player on the Wildcats and is a threat to score when he touches the ball.

Gabe Sibert, Rossview: Sibert returned from an injury last week to throw for a pair of touchdowns and run for one more in the Hawks' loss to Hendersonville.
