After achieving their season goal of reaching the TSSAA postseason, the Kenwood Knights’ campaign ended with a 55-7 loss at Southwind on Friday night.

While the final score was lopsided, Kenwood coach Les Greer said he was pleased with the way his team performed.

“We came out and played well,” Greer said. “We moved the ball, forced them to earn what they were going to earn early. (Southwind RB Romal Webb) is pretty good, he showed why he’s the leading rusher in Memphis, top back in the state. We had a chance.”

The biggest takeaways for the Knights were youth, experience and learning.

With only four seniors starting on Friday, the Knights rolled with an extremely young core. Naturally, that core gained plenty of experience against a talented team. In turn, they’ve learned plenty about what they need to do to be better in 2020.

“We’ve always said we’re going to do things the right way and get better, and we showed that tonight,” Greer said. “We showed that you can go on the road, long road trip, long playoff game, and pick up something we can learn from. It’s not an easy thing to do. We use it as motivation for next year (to) try to get a home playoff game.I was proud of the way they fought and how they fought all night long.”

Greer noted that he values having the extra week of practice and, while he would have liked more, thinks that the added time gave his team perspective. They will now focus on bulking up during the offseason to get their bodies to a place where they can come out stronger than before.

“We talked about how the future is extremely bright at Kenwood,” Greer said. “A lot of young players pitching in, playing the right way and learning the technique and just improving.”

The Knights finished the season 2-9 with a 2-4 Region 7-5A record. The loss ended the high school football careers of seniors Zyon Moore, Kavarius Moody, Derrick Bannister, Christopher Williams, Tashaun Cantrell, Trelon Gadson, Malik Kelly, Derionte Gayles, John Stroman, Marvell Gallon, Aaron Miller, Jordan McGee and Cade German.
