Robert Hassell III: Why I signed with Vanderbilt baseball

Robert Hassell III
For The Tennessean

The Tennessean asked Independence senior baseball standout Robert Hassell III to write an essay on why he chose to sign with Vanderbilt.

After my freshman year at Independence, my parents and I met with coach Tim Corbin and toured the Vanderbilt baseball facilities.

I was honored he took the time to meet as the baseball team was leaving for the Super Regionals the next day. Stepping onto the campus of Vanderbilt and seeing for myself the program leadership present made my decision an easy one.

The facilities are player-centered focusing on developing strong, healthy players. The elite coaching staff coach Corbin has assembled is some of the best in the country and being part of the Vandy Boy brotherhood is an honor.

I remember telling my parents in the car on the way home from the meeting that I felt like a better person just by listening to coach speak.

I believe he not only wants me to succeed as a baseball player but, more importantly, as a man.  I walked away from that first meeting believing I could be a contribution to the team with the guidance of the coaches at Vanderbilt.

Another factor is the education at Vanderbilt is second to none. Getting to be a part of a university that not only has a nationally-ranked baseball program, but the education is one of the best in the country is a true win-win for me.

Living less than 30 minutes from campus allows my family to come to home games.  That was not an important factor in deciding to commit to Vanderbilt, but sure did make my mom smile when I did.
