When Morristown West’s Halyn Long was deciding where she wanted to spend her next few years after high school, being close to home is something that she kept coming back to.
On Thursday, Long chose to be about as close to home as she possibly could be.
Long signed with Walters State Thursday afternoon in the Morristown West Auditorium, capping off a successful four-year high school career.
“I was thinking about my decision and how far away from home I wanted to be and how close I wanted to be,” Long said. “And Walters State just felt like home to be, and that was really big for me.”
Long will be used as a libero for the Lady Senators, who are coming off a successful season themselves that saw them reach the Southeast District Championship.
Long feels that there are a few things she needs to improve before arriving in Walters State. However, she’s been looking forward to signing day for quite some time. Even if she wasn’t signing in a sport that she originally thought she would.
“I’ve been waiting on this a long time,” Long said. “I made the right decision to go to Walters State. When I was little, I thought I was going to be a basketball player. But then I quit basketball and stuck with volleyball, and I am really glad that I did.”
Long is coming off a senior season that saw Morristown West win the regular season District title and finish runner-up in the District and made the semi-finals of the Region.
In her final match for the Lady Trojans, Long had nine digs.
In her junior and sophomore seasons, the Lady Trojans won the District Tournament and reached the semi-finals in the Region. Long’s freshman year, Morristown West made it all the way to sectionals before losing.
A lot of improvement was seen from Long throughout her senior season and career as she felt like the year prepared her for what is to come at Walters State.
“Our senior season went well, and I feel like I have really grown from my freshman year to my senior year,” Long said. “It really helped me to mature and make this decision. We had a lot of seniors, so that really helped us grow, and we did really well.”
Morristown West will be replacing Long and six other seniors and a head coach heading into next season. Walters State replaces two of their players from this season, with one being a libero, opening the door for Long to start immediately.
