The first eight players are nominees for The Tennessean girls soccer player of the year. The winner will be announced on May 29 at the fifth annual Tennessean Sports Awards presented by Farm Bureau Health Plans.

Why chosen: Betts scored a team-high 52 goals and had 15 assists for the Division II-A runner-up Lady Lions.

Why chosen: The Austin Peay signee had two goals and dished out 13 assists for the Lady Raptors.

Why chosen: The Vanderbilt signee gave up six goals for the entire season and posted 13 shutouts for the Class AAA runner-up Lady Bruins.

Position: Midfielder

Why chosen: Giles was the District 10-AAA MVP and was the key reason the Lady Commandos reached the Class AAA sectionals. She finished with three goals and five assists.

Why chosen: The Samford signee finished with 16 goals and had 12 assists for the Class AAA state runner-up Lady Bruins.

Why chosen: Wepking was the District 9-AA MVP and was the key cog to a defense that had 10 shutouts and finished Class AA state runner-up.
