TSSAA football state championships: What happened in Day 1, top performers, recruiting update

The first day of the 2019 TSSAA BlueCross Bowls ended Thursday at Tennessee Tech's Tucker Stadium in Cookeville with two new state champions and one repeat winner.

Jay Hardy, McCallie. Hardy, who is an Auburn commitment and No. 3 prospect in the state according to the 247Sports Composite, wrapped up his high school career with three tackles, two sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. Story via Tom Kreager.

BlueCross Bowl top performers

Cole Allen, MBA. Allen had six solo tackles and a pass breakup.

Andrew Agapos, ECS. Agapos recorded 13 total tackles with one for loss and forced a fumble.

Wesley Carlock, USJ. Carlock had eight catches for 156 yards with a touchdown.

Carter Craig, USJ. Craig caught four passes for 74 yards with a touchdown.

Aaron Crowder, McCallie. Crowder had eight tackles with 2.5 sacks.

Sam Ellis, CPA. Ellis had six total tackles and returned an interception 26 yards.

Jalen Greenwood, ECS. Greenwood rushed for 99 yards with a touchdown.

DeAngelo Hardy, McCallie. Hardy was 5-of-7 passing for 59 yards. He also had 103 rushing yards and two TDs on 17 carries.

B.J. Harris, McCallie. Harris had 15 carries for 89 yards.

Zak Herbstreit, MBA. Herbstreet had four catches for 60 yards.

Austin Hill, ECS. Hill had six total tackles, recovered a fumble and had a quarterback hurry. On offense, he had a 51-yard reception.

Graham Holzapfel, MBA. Holzapfel had nine total tackles with a forced fumble.

Cade Law, CPA. Law was 10-of-20 passing for 135 yards with a touchdown. He also rushed for 85 yards and a TD on 14 carries.

Jack McKennon, MBA. McKennon had four catches for 95 yards with an 81-yard TD catch.

Langston Patterson, CPA. Patterson had 11 total tackles with 1.5 tackles for loss.

A.J. Quinn, Davidson Academy. Quinn had six tackles, 2.5 for loss, forced a fumble, had a sack and had three quarterback hurries. On offense, he had three catches for 42 yards.

Bryce Rawls, Davidson Academy. Rawls was 7-of-9 passing for 107 yards. He also rushed for 77 yards and scored a touchdown. He also had nine tackles on defense with 2.5 for loss and recovered a fumble.

Marcel Reed, MBA. Reed was 11-of-17 passing for 179 yards and a TD.

Eric Rivers, McCallie. Rivers had 81 yards on seven carries and had a touchdown.

Ethan Saunders, ECS. Saunders had eight total tackles, and a sack.

Cody Smith, USJ. Smith was 15-of-26 passing for 247 yards with two touchdowns.

Griffin Swinea, Davidson Academy. Swinea rushed for a game-high 285 yards on 24 carries. He also scored a game-high four touchdowns.

Tyler Wallace, USJ. Wallace recorded 11 total tackles, had two for loss and forced a fumble.

The TSSAA honors one athlete for the state championship game MVP after each BlueCross Bowl.

Division II-A: Griffin Swinea, Davidson Academy.

Division II-AA: Andrew Agapos, Evangelical Christian School

Division II-AAA: DeAngelo Hardy, McCallie

What's on tap for Friday?

The TSSAA will hold its Class 1A, 3A and 5A state championship games on Friday.

Here is the schedule:

1A: Greenback vs. Lake Co., 11 a.m.

3A: Alcoa vs. Pearl-Cohn, 3 p.m.

5A: Knoxville Central vs. Summit, 7 p.m.
