Smyrna boys rally to beat Stewarts Creek in thriller

Smyrna’s Thomas Riddle hit a midrange jump shot with one second to play, capping off a fourth-quarter rally to push the Bulldogs past the Stewarts Creek Red Hawks 61-60 Friday night.

Smyrna and Stewarts Creek traded baskets in the game’s final minute. There were four lead changes in the last minute. Both of Stewarts Creek’s baskets came from Trevor Chatman, while TJ Lee and Riddle answered with shots of their own.

Stewarts Creek had a nine-point lead entering the fourth quarter. That was overcome thanks in part to the Bulldogs changing defensive tactics by putting senior center Savon Wykle at the top of the key and using every inch of his 6-foot- 4 frame to disrupt the Red Hawk offense before it could get in the half court.

“Coach was telling us to pressure them when we were down,” Wykle said. “He said ‘this is it, go beat your rival.’”

Wykle was the game’s leading scorer with 23 points. But perhaps the best player on the floor was Smyrna’s Tyler Lansden. The senior guard had 15 points, five coming in the fourth quarter, and was fearless driving to the rim. Lansden got to the free throw line six times and had quick hands on the defensive side, picking up a number of steals.

“Whatever it takes to win,” Lansden said. “Some nights I have six points and 12 assists. Some other nights I have to get 18, 20 on my own. Whatever the team needs, that’s what I like to do.”
