The number two was important for Tellico Plains on Tuesday.
It signified the number of points the Bears (5-3, 2-1 District 4-A) allowed to Lookout Valley in the first quarter of their 49-43 district victory.
Tellico’s defense set the tone early, with the Bears giving up just three more points in the entire first half.
But the number two also marks the Bears’ current district winning streak. Tellico lost its opening district game to CSAS before beating Sale Creek on Dec. 13 and Lookout Valley on Tuesday.
The Bears led 24-5 at halftime, but Lookout Valley fielded more offensive success in the second half, scoring 17 points in the third quarter compared to Tellico’s 10. The Bears held a 34-23 advantage to start the fourth.
Lookout Valley kept up its push in the game’s final period, producing 21 points, but the Bears’ 15 were enough to keep their lead secure and take the district victory, 49-43.
Major Carter led the Bears with 16 points. Evan Harris was second on the roster in scoring with 14.
Tellico Plains girls 55, Lookout Valley 35:While a single-digit number represents the recent success of Tellico’s boys team, the double-digits are necessary to do justice for the Lady Bears.
As has become normal for Tellico, the Lady Bears (8-0, 3-0 District 4-A) had multiple players score double-digit points in their 55-35 district win over Lookout Valley on Tuesday.
Maggie Hooper (15), Chloe Ratledge (11) and Kori Hamilton (11) all scored in double digits in the win.
Tellico’s high-powered offense propelled the Lady Bears to a 23-7 end-of-first-quarter lead and continued to a 32-15 halftime advantage.
The Lady Bears were never truly threatened against Lookout Valley, as they cruised to a 43-24 lead at the end of the third quarter on their way to the victory.
Hooper, Ratledge and Hamilton were Tellico’s scoring leaders.
