Morristown East’s Abbie Creech (2) drives the ball down the floor as Devaisa Kyle trails in their game against Sevier County Tuesday night at Isenberg-Siler Gym.
Morristown East’s girls suffered another heart-breaking loss Tuesday night at Isenberg-Siler Gymnasium as Sevier County escaped with a 25-24 victory when a last-second shot by the Lady Hurricanes went off the rim.
The Lady ‘Canes took a 22-17 lead into the fourth quarter, but scored only two points over the final eight minutes.
It was a battle of two teams who didn’t shoot the ball very well when they managed to hang on to it long enough to even get off a shot.
No player on either side scored in double figures as the Bearettes improved their record to 9-7 overall and 4-3 in Inter Mountain Conference action.
East saw its record dip to 9-11 overall and 1-6 in the conference.
Mackenna Loveday led the winners with seven points and, which happened to be the very first seven points in the game. Amanda Clabo and Shelby Smith added five points apiece for Sevier County.
East got eight points from Finley Surber before she left the game with an injury midway of the third quarter and did not return. Devasia Kyle and Kierstin Bell added five each.
Sevier County shot 19.6 percent from the floor and still managed to win. The Bearettes hit only 9 of 46 shots and were 2 of 12 from three-point range.
East hit 8 of 33 for 24.2 percent and was 1 of 7 behind the arc.
The winners dominated the boards, especially in the second half, and ended with a 38-25 rebounding margin. Emma Huskey grabbed 10 stray shots and Loveday eight for the winners. Lindsey Winstead had 10 for East.
“We fought hard tooth and nail all night,” said East coach Michael Potts. “We battled all the way, but we couldn’t make shots when we really needed to and we couldn’t get a rebound.”
He added, “I thought the girls did a good job of sticking with our game play after the first four minutes of the game.
“But in the second half, they got every rebound it seemed and it eventually cost us a chance to win.”
East had a chance at the end as they grabbed a rebound off a missed free throw by Clabo and got fouled. They had the ball under the opposite basket with 7.6 second remaining but didn’t have any time outs left.
The ball came in to Kyle, who raced up the court and had the ball knocked out of bounds with 1.7 showing. The inbounds pass came to Kyle again and she fired up a long distance shot that came off the backboard and just inside the rim before bounding away.
With Loveday doing the damage, the Bearettes led 9-2 after one quarter, but East came on strong in the second stanza Surber had two baskets and Sable Burnside hit four free throws to go with a three by Kyle. The Lady Hurricanes scored the final 10 points of the half to lead 14-10 at halftime.
Shilah Whaley scored the first basket of the third quarter, but Bell and Surber scored back-to-back for East and it was 18-12. Smith hit a three and Whaley added a free throw to pull the Bearettes within 18-17 with 4:03 left in the period.
Winstead hit a basket for East with 3:23 left and neither team scored until Bell cashed in two free throws with 35.3 left
Huskey grabbed a rebound and scored to start the fourth. Clabo had a driving basket with 6:11 remaining and neither team scored again until Clabo scored inside with 2:37 to play to give Sevier the lead.
Smith was fouled at the 22.6 mark and gave the Bearettes a three-point lead by sinking two charity tosses. Kyle then took the ball to the basket and scored with 10.5 on the clock. East fouled Clabo to set the stage for the frantic finish.
