The Huntland High School Hornets lost to the Fayetteville City Tigers 62-57 on the road Tuesday for their 14th loss of the season.
The Hornets gave the highly-ranked Tigers all they could handle throughout the contest, but their upset bid would come up a few points short.
The Hornets ended the opening period on a 9-2 run to give themselves an early advantage in the contest. Dylan Schultz scored eight of Huntland’s 14 points in the first quarter.
They led 14-7 after one quarter.
The Tigers began to catch fire from beyond the arc in the second quarter, and that allowed them to tighten up the score before the end of the first half.
The game was tied at 32-32 at halftime.
The biggest point of separation on the scoreboard in the third quarter was just five points as the Tigers got a late 3-pointer to create some separation on the scoreboard.
The Hornets trailed 46-41 going into the final period.
The Hornets tied the game up multiple times in the fourth quarter, and a 3-pointer from Colton Ray with 30 seconds remaining made it a one-point game. However, the Hornets would not score again as the Tigers hit a few free throws in the closing moments to beat them by five.
Schultz led the Hornets with 22 points for the game, followed by Ray with 15 points.
Will Jolley and Garrett Jernigan scored seven points each, and Bryson Johnson scored six points.
