Wrestling: Fairview continues postseason prep, clips Brentwood, Nolensville

Wrestling – Brentwood, Fairview at Nolensville

Riley Bennett of Fairview vs. Dean Klueppelberg of Brentwood

With the postseason looming, the Fairview wrestling team picked up three wins Tuesday at Nolensville, including taking down Class A-AA rival and host Knights as well as Class AAA Brentwood.

The Yellow Jackets, coming off an impressive second place showing at the Greeneville Invitational over the weekend, defeated Nolensville in a battle of state dual contenders 40-27 and tipped the bigger Bruins 48-30. Fairview also earned a 54-30 win against Eagleville in the quad meet at Nolensville High School.

Senior 138-pounder Riley Bennett, who went 3-0 with three first round pins Tuesday, said the Yellow Jackets gained confidence from the wins against quality opponents.

“This one means a lot for us, I mean Nolensville made the finals last year, so it’s good to know that we’re up there with them this year,” said Bennett, last year’s 132-pound state runner-up. “We had some freshmen really contribute today and that really helps them know where we stand. … we just need to keep pursuing that ultimate goal – a state championship.”

The Yellow Jackets dropped a tight 37-33 dual against Greeneville last season in the Class A-AA state duals consolation. Fairview took third in 2018. Nolensville fell to Pigeon Forge last year in the dual championship. Pigeon Forge had clipped Fairview in the semifinals.

“I think you’ll definitely see Nolensville in the state duals, they’ve got a tough team,” Yellow Jackets coach James Derrick said. “We still have to take care of some business Friday, like they do, but tonight, it gave us a bit of that state feel.”

The meet featured eight returning state medalists from the three Williamson County teams and Tuesday’s Fairview vs. Nolensville showdown kicked off with two upper weight returning medalists battling to a 9-8 draw in a potential individual state tournament preview.

Fairview’s Jacob Clevenger, who placed fifth at 182 last season as a freshman, rallied from a 4-2 deficit at 195 to secure a lead entering the third period before holding off Nolensville’s McKinley Wagner for the narrow decision. Wagner placed fifth at 195 last season.

Clevenger turned the tables with a reversal and take down to end the second period.

“They have some great kids and we have some great kids,” Nolensville coach Josh Peck said. “We have some great leadership, so hopefully we can put it all together here at the end.

“It’s great to see (Fairview) like this, but you know we obviously have a lot of homework to do on each other. We’re hoping to see each other again in the state finals. I know that’s our goal.”

Three veterans – seniors Gavin Channell (152) and Jacob Vogelpohl (138) and junior Riley Lippincott (126) – paced the Knights. The trio combined to go 9-0 Tuesday with both Channell and Vogelpohl winning in multiple weight classes.

Lippincott, who was third at state at 106 last season, won all three of his matches by pin, including stopping Fairview’s Zach Derrick in the first round. Two weeks ago at the Franklin Rebel Invitational, Lippincott didn’t surrender a point in a first-place showing.

“Riley’s been wrestling out of his mind for us lately,” Peck said.

In a battle at 145, Vogelpohl topped Fairview freshman Malachi Bennett – Riley Bennett’s younger brother and practice partner – with an 8-4 decision. The younger Bennett was coming off a title in the same weight class at the Greeneville tournament.

“It’s definitely fun having him out there,” Bennett said of his younger brother. "I hope he keeps winning."

Malachi Bennett earned a late pin against junior Samuel Sullivan of Brentwood before facing Vogelpohl next.

The Bruins picked up wins against the Knights – 44-35 – and claimed a 54-27 victory over Eagleville.

Zach Ordonez (106), Kizer Hensley (132) and Garner Jones (160) led Brentwood with three wins apiece.

Brentwood coach Damon Smith praised the talent in the county as his team, though missing a couple grapplers, split with Fairview and Nolensville in two quality showings.

“We’re loaded in Williamson County,” he said. “Nolensville and Fairview do a great job with their programs and I think they’re going to continue to get better.

“Tonight was about wrestling hard and preparing for next week going into our districts and regionals. I’m proud of our kids for competing hard against some tough competition.”

Fairview avenged a 42-36 loss in December against the Bruins at the Brentwood Academy Duals. The smaller county school also owns wins against Summit and Page, while battling Independence to the end as well.

“We’re the little brother, or the step child – whatever you want to use, so you know when we come in and wrestle and compete with these bigger county schools, it shows how our program has continued to grow,” Derrick said. “We feel fortunate and want to continue our hard work. … It’s lose small, win big from here on out.”
