After having their 16-game winning streak snapped one week ago, the Clarksville Academy Lady Cougars have laid the foundation for a new tear. On Thursday, they won their second consecutive win with a convincing 74-29 blowout of Davidson Academy.

As has been the case in most games this season, defense led the way for the Lady Cougars. They managed to force the Lady Bears into bad looks, resulting in a 20.4 percent field goal percentage. Additionally, Clarksville Academy grabbed 12 steals and forced 15 turnovers.

“We take pride in our defense. In practice we play against our coaches and they’re bigger, more athletic, it’s harder to play against them,” said CA guard Sydneey Boykin. “So when we play against our size, it’s easier to get into the mentality of, ‘Don’t let your man beat you.’”

The Bears were held to 10 points or less in all four quarters, including just four in the first eight minutes.

That lockdown defense led to naturally-easy offense, with Clarksville Academy scoring at least 20 points in each of the first three quarters. All 10 Lady Cougars that saw game action scored and seven of them had at least one assist, leading to dimes on over half of the team’s made field goals.

“We talked a lot about not having too many dribbles,” said CA coach Carrie Daniels. “Passing the ball, moving. If we can get the defense to shift, then we’ll get a good look. I thought the girls did a very good job of creating things from defense in transition, but also when we were forced into the half-court game, I thought tonight we executed more in the half court sets. Just extremely proud to be able to see the intensity they put on the court.”

Boykin starred with 17 points on 66.7 percent shooting with four rebounds, four steals and two assists. Forward Makayla Artis approached a double-double, coming up just shy with 10 points and eight rebounds, along with three steals, two assists and two blocks.
