Brentwood Academy’s girls ran into a buzzsaw Friday night, while the boys took advantage of some late mistakes to pick up a win at Ensworth.

The Eagles converted two Ensworth turnovers into points in the final two minutes and came away with a 58-55 victory. The BA girls fell behind 25-7 after the first quarter and never recovered in a 66-35 loss to the Lady Tigers.

“If you give them what they’re good at, you make them look really good,” BA girls coach Rhonda Brown said. “We just didn’t do what we’re supposed to do. I think we played right into them.”

The boys trailed 53-52 with just under three minutes remaining, but Dominic Wynn slipped and turned the ball over with 1:24 to go, giving the Eagles the opportunity they needed.

“Our seniors, they’ve all played in big games, and they showed it tonight,” first-year Eagles coach Matt Hoppe said.

Trent McNair converted two free throws to give BA the lead with 33 seconds left, then sealed it by hitting two more with three seconds left to make it 58-53 at that point. McNair was one of three Eagles in double figures with 12, while Caleb Brooks had 23 and D.J. Senter finished with 10.

“Coach is always pushing us to go the extra mile,” Brooks said. “We just wanted to play calm and play together.”

After trailing for all of the third quarter, the Eagles fought back and the lead changed hands seven times in the fourth before BA took control for good.

“We stress our practices to be competitive, so when stuff like that happens, it’s nothing new to them,” Hoppe said. “We held them to just 16 points in the second half. That’s just a credit to our guys.”

The Lady Eagles never could bounce back after Ensworth’s pressure forced multiple turnovers in the first quarter, and BA fell behind 25-7.

“I told the kids that with them it can turn from two into 22 in a hurry,” Brown said.

BA was frustrated offensively in the first half, being limited to few shots and not being able to establish any kind of flow.

“I think we have a lot to focus on ourselves,” senior Maggie Brown said. “We’ve progressed a lot, but we still have a long way to go.”
