Behind the efforts of two juniors, 2020’s Mr. Bowling, CJ Petrin, and Griffin Lee, the Notre Dame boys brought home the 2019-2020 State Bowling championship from Smyrna on Saturday. Lee knocked down 1758  (586, 504, 668) pins for an average of 195.3, while Petrin, was tops in totaling 1905 (640, 606, 658) pins through 9 matches for an average of 211.5.

On Friday, after leading going into the final match, Petrin finished second to Pope John Paul II’s Matthew Mesecher in the Division II boys’ individual championships.

As the top bowler coming out of the semifinals, Petrin had to await the results of the ladder matches to determine his finals’ foe.

Mesecher, the number two qualifier, bested Tony Craig, a senior out of Christian brothers, 175-167, to set up the match with Petrin.

The Irish bowler then fell to his fellow junior by just three pins, 177-174.

Speaking from Smyrna, site of the state tournament, the junior bowler, taking solace in his team’s win, said, “It feels great to win the state title with this team that has worked so hard. We really came together today when it counted.”

The Irish, the number one seed from the East, began their quest for the championship with an 21-6 defeat of Lipscomb Academy in the quarterfinals (3273 pins to 2747). Petrin rolled a series of 203, 215, 222, while teammate Griffin Lee had an effort of 191, 226, 169.

In the semifinal match against St. Benedict, it was somewhat closer, as Notre Dame prevailed 16-11 (3337-3288), after dropping the first game of the match, 1221-1089.

This time it was Carson Barasha taking up the slack with a 191, 239, 224 series, as the Irish dropped 181 more pins than their opponents over the last two games to defeat the Eagles.

In the championship match, Notre Dame rolled over Christian Brothers, 18-9 (3464-3233).

It truly was a team effort, as stated by Petrin, “Both matches today were really close and came down to the 3rd game. Every member of the team had to bowl their best. It felt amazing to win with this team after the tough loss in individuals.”

The Irish bowlers only up by 20 pins and tied at two-all after the second game, pulled together to roll a 1267 total to the Purple Wave’s 1056 to pick up the final two bonus points of the match.

Griffin Lee again led the Irish with a 668 (221, 211, 236) series, 10 pins over Petrin’s 658 (234, 213, 211). Pitching in were Carson Barasha with a 573, and Boston Eberly with a 567. Patrick Byrne had a 518 and Lane Cannon rolled his high game of the match with 201 to complete a 480 series.

In accepting the Mr. Bowling award, Petrin was reflective in his comments, “This year the awards were dedicated to Kyle Frasure and Caroline Conrad who were both great bowlers in Tennessee and passed away in separate car accidents. To win Mr. Bowling in memory of them is a great honor.”

McCallie qualified as the number two team out of the East, but fell to Christian Brothers in the quarterfinals, 22-5 (3209-2638). Junior Andrew Haun, who finished fourth in the individual championships, led the Blue Tornado with a 563 series (189, 227, 147). Teammate Jet Hieronymous picked up two points with his 551 series (208, 192, 151).

The Chattanooga area had no teams qualify in Division I, but two boys represented their schools in the individual championships. Walker Valley’s Jacob Brown and Rhea County’s Phillip Rogers finished eighth and ninth, just out of qualifying for the final ladder matches.

In the Division II girls’ tournament, Baylor lost to St. Benedict, 22-5 in the quarterfinals, while GPS fell to Pope John Paul II, 20-7.

Allie Foropoulos of GPS rolled her way to a seventh place finish, one spot shy of qualifying for the finals, in the DII girls’ individual championships. The junior finished the semis with a 613 total, one pin behind sixth place Kyleigh Pitzer from Friendship Academy.

Foropoulos had a series of 170, 169, 135 and 139 for aan average of 153.25. Pitzer edged her out with a 153.50.
