The Pioneers roughed up Coffee County 51-27 in the border battle, a stinging loss for the visiting Red Raiders.
Coffee County’s big guys took care of business, with Cardin Stump winning the heavyweight matchup at 285 pounds and Cristopher Speegle winning at 225 pounds by a 2-0 decision. Gavin Prater also proved victorious in the match of the night – a three-round thriller against Hunter Pezzimenti at 145 pounds that ended with a Red Raider pin.
Otherwise, Coffee County’s other victories came when Dalrong Long and Gabriel Westbrook saw their hands raised when Warren County didn’t field an opponent in the 120- and 126-pound weight classes.
Stump already knew his team was too far behind on points when he took the mat in the heavyweight division, but it didn’t stop him from dominating. Stump make quick work of Austin Judkins, getting to a controlling position and securing a pin in just 1 minute, 15 seconds.
Speegle had trouble gaining any separation from Timothy Jernigan in his match, but a takedown proved to be the difference as Coffee County’s top 220-pounder came out on top.
The victories were a carryover from the Mountain Top tournament held Jan. 18, where Stump placed second and Speegle, the team’s lone senior, took third.
Prater (third, 145), Jeremiah Wardell (fourth, 106) and Hunter Massey (second, 126) also brought home medals from the Sewanee event.
Prater was in a back-and-forth battle with Hunter Pezzimenti at Warren County, even looking like he may be pinned at the early part of the third period. He was able to wiggle out of the position though, giving him new life.
He quickly seized control, wearing down the Pioneer and earning a pin with just 43 seconds left in the bout.
In the lone girls’ matchup, Coffee County’s Alanna Coker took down freshman Kieven Franco, a state champion at the middle school level last year.
On Thursday, the Coffee Middle Lady Raiders and Red Raiders both picked up big wins over Harris, the Westwood Lady Rockets beat Fayetteville 11-0 and the Westwood Rockets lost to Cascade 12-7.
The CCCHS Lady Raiders won their sixth consecutive game with a 13-6 win over Warren County on Thursday night at Terry Floyd Field.
On Thursday night, the CCCHS Red Raiders scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to lift them over Moore County 7-6 in the first game of the Crethan Hansert Classic.
On Thursday night, the CCCHS Red Raiders beat Spring Hill 4-0 for their third district win of the season.
On Thursday afternoon, CCCHS senior Jacob Barlow signed his letter of intent to wrestle at Cumberland University.
On Tuesday, the Coffee Middle Red Raiders fell to the E.O. Coffman Panthers 4-1.
On Tuesday, the CCCHS Red Raiders lost on the road at Lincoln County 12-5 as the Falcons picked up the season sweep of the Red Raiders.
After losing their first district game of the season on Monday, the CCCHS Red Raiders beat Warren County 3-0 on Tuesday night for a season sweep of the Pioneers.
On Tuesday night, the CCCHS Lady Raiders collected their fifth district win of the season after beating Columbia Central 9-2 at Terry Floyd Field.
On Tuesday afternoon, CCCHS senior cheerleader Addison VanWinkle signed her letter of intent to Cumberland University.
