Second half surge carries Beech past Gallatin

GALLATIN – A strong shooting night led to a dominating second half performance for the Beech Buccaneers Friday night in a 68-39 win on the road at Gallatin.

We shot the ball really well tonight, played good defense, and really played well in all phases,” Beech head coach Kip Brown said. I really like the way were playing right now. Weve been sharing the ball with each other and our defense has gotten better. But theyre still hungry and not satisfied.”

Beech shot 12 three-pointers, seven of which came in the second half. After taking a 34-25 lead at halftime, the Bucs began the third quarter by going on a 22-2 run that stretched into the fourth quarter.

Beech stifled Gallatin on defense as well, holding the Green Wave to only one field goal in the third quarter and a total of only 14 points in the second half.

The Bucs jumped out to a 17-6 lead to begin the game after a three from Jyquale Matthews. Gallatin slowly fought back to within five, 22-17, in the second quarter but it would be their closest deficit the entire game.

Kaleb Powell led all scorers with 12 points, but Beech remained balanced offensively with five different players scoring at least eight points. Sam McClendon and Kristian Shaw led the Bucs from behind the arc with three three-pointers each.

The game served as a microcosm of the direction both teams have been trending in recent weeks. The win marks Beechs fourth straight as they improve to 17-8 overall and 7-3 in district play. Despite beating Beech in their first meeting on Jan. 7, the loss now marks their sixth straight, falling to 13-10 overall and 3-7 in district.

I thought we were competitive in the first half, but I think they broke us early in the third quarter and we just bailed out from an emotional and physical standpoint,” Gallatin head coach Bobby Luna said. Weve lost six games in a row and nobody is happy. Well make every attempt in the world to be better on Tuesday.”
