The Huntland High School Lady Hornets beat the Moore County Raiderettes 54-52 on the road Tuesday for their 18th win of the season.
The Lady Hornets lost starters Ashtyn Danley and Logan McLennan to injuries in the first half, but they persevered to beat their district rival and extend their winning streak.
Both teams held the lead a few times throughout the opening period with the Raiderettes holding a slight edge early.
The Lady Hornets trailed 15-13 after one quarter.
The Lady Hornets ended the first half on a 15-5 run to build a double-digit lead before halftime. Mikaylie Edwards scored 10 of Huntland’s 15 points during that run.
They led 33-23 at the start of the second half.
The Raiderettes slowly chipped away at the deficit and were able to tie the game just before the end of the third quarter. Anna Stevenson scored seven of Huntland’s nine points in the third quarter.
The score was tied at 42-42 going into the final period.
The Lady Hornets jumped back ahead early in the fourth quarter and led by two points in the final minute. The Raiderettes went for a 3-point shot to take the lead with 20 seconds to play, but the shot would miss with Edwards grabbing the rebound.
Edwards would be fouled shortly after and hit the ensuing free throws to clinch the victory with 12 seconds remaining. The Raiderettes made a layup at the buzzer, but it did not change the result as Huntland won by two.
Stevenson led the Lady Hornets with 22 points for the game, followed by Edwards with 12 points and Maddux Golden with 10.
Camille Bland scored five points, McLennan scored three and Brooklyn Morris scored two.
With the win, the Lady Hornets improved to 18-7 on the season and 8-0 in district play.
They will next play Friday at home against Fayetteville City High School. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
