The Summit boys basketball team didn’t let Saturday’s disappointment drag them down on Tuesday night.

Instead, the No. 2-seeded Spartans played with pep and purpose while defeating top-seeded Brentwood 56-41 in the third-place game of the District 11-AAA tournament at Independence High School.

Summit’s victory — which was fueled by a terrific start and strong performances from Tre Carlton and Destin Wade — enabled the Spartans (21-8) to bounce back in a major way after they were upset by No. 3-seeded Dickson County in Saturday’s semifinals.

Carlton finished with a game-high 22 points and Wade added 19 for the Spartans, who jumped out to a 15-5 lead at the end of the first quarter and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way. They owned a 29-9 lead midway through the second quarter and never allowed Brentwood (21-8) to draw closer than 12 points in the second half.

Summit coach Jim Fey said he was pleased with the intensity shown by his team, despite the fact that they had hoped to be playing in the championship game on Saturday night.

“Being in the consolation game is a lot like being a bride’s maid — and no one wants to be a bride’s maid,” said Fey. “But as I’ve said all year long, I’ve got a bunch of winners on this team.”

Both Brentwood and Summit will now begin preparing for the Region 6-AAA tournament, which begins Saturday night at Overton.

Summit will carry plenty of momentum into regionals. The Spartans have gone 15-2 since late December, including posting a 48-45 win over Brentwood on Jan. 31 that marked the Bruins’ first district loss of the season.

During Saturday’s victory, Carlton and Wade scored 24 of Summit’s 31 points in the first half. Wade scored 11 points in the first quarter and Carlton scored nine in the second, helping Summit to a 31-14 lead at the half. Brentwood pulled within 12 points, 39-27, after a 3-pointer by Jake Brock with 52 seconds left in the third quarter, but Summit responded by putting together a 9-2 run to rebuild a 19-point cushion, 48-29, with 4:50 left in the game.

“Hopefully this win will propel us into some more success,” said Fey.

Evan Drennan scored a team-high 11 points for Brentwood, but no other player had more than four for the Bruins, who didn’t shoot their first free throw of the game until the 2:39 mark of the fourth quarter. They finished 2-of-3 from the line for the game.

The district tournament was a bumpy ride for the Bruins. After storming back from an early 20-1 deficit in a win over Independence in their tourney opener on Friday, Brentwood suffered a 58-46 loss to Franklin in the semifinals, followed by Saturday’s loss to Summit.

Brentwood coach Greg Shirley knows his team will have to bounce back quickly, and he said he is confident that the Bruins will do so.

“The character and will of this team — I never doubt it,” he said. “Tonight was a tough night, but we will move forward and just continue to try to be the best Brentwood team we can be.”

Shirley knows Brentwood is capable of doing something special in the weeks ahead — as evidenced by the Bruins’ terrific regular season.

“What a year for Brentwood High School,” he said. “Going 14-2 and winning this district is not easy.”
