Blackman’s girls’ postseason hot streak came to a screeching halt last Saturday with a 58-55 heartbreaking overtime loss to visiting Stone Memorial.

In the overtime, the team’s traded one-point leads at 55-54 and 56-55. However, Mattie Buck, the coach’s daughter, stepped up and made two free throws to give Stone Memorial a three-point lead.

Blackman had the ball but had a double-dribble with four seconds left. Stone Memorial inbounded the ball ran out the clock and will head to the TSSAA state tournament for the first time ever this week.

“It is the first time someone from our area has made the state tournament in Class AAA,” said Stone Memorial coach Mike Buck, a former MTSU basketball standout in the late 1980s. “We knocked the door down tonight as this is a tough place to play and win.”

Stone Memorial led through the first eight minutes as it had two six-point leads. Blackman came back and went ahead on the 3-point shooting of Iyana Moore, who had 12 points in the first half all on outside shots. Blackman went on a 10-2 run to grab an eight-point before it eventually led 32-26 at the half.

Stone Memorial came out firing in the third quarter, outscoring Blackman 16-8 to grab a four-point lead heading to the final quarter. Stone Memorial led late 48-45 until Moore drilled a 3 and a hit a layup to give the Lady Blaze a 50-48 lead late.

The Lady Panthers made a pair of free throws to tie it and then stole the ball late. Emma Capps just missed a shot that would have won it in regulation.

Blackman was led by Moore with 22 points, Victoria Page with 15 and Joelle Patton with 14. Stone Memorial was led by Belmont commit Tessa Miller with 20, Keaton Freitag with 11 and Buck with 10 points.

“We showed a lot of resiliency this year and I am proud of them,” Blackman coach Wendi Scott said. “We could have laid down after the district tournament but these girls have nothing to hang their heads about.”
