Dramatic opening to spring sports

Brandon O’Brien’s two-out single drove in Davin Miles as Spring Hill opened the season with a 6-5 walk-off win Monday against District 11-AAA rival Independence.

Brantly Whitwell paced the Raider offense with three hits (including a double) and a pair of runs, with Brett Bell adding two hits and driving in a run. Jackson Marbet, the third Spring Hill pitcher of the game, worked two shutout innings with three strikeouts to pick up the victory.

Columbia Central 7, Coffee Co. 3: The host Lions scored three first-inning runs and Jaden Hamm made the early lead for a District 8-AAA homefield victory.

Hamm, the reigning 8-AAA pitcher of the year, struck out eight in 5 1/3 innings, while Braydon Kercado drove in three runs. Caden Cameron and Bryce Smylar each doubled, with Hamm adding a hit and scoring three runs.

Christ Presbyterian Acad. 7, Columbia Acad. 0: Kavares Tears struck out nine in four innings, but the visiting Lions touched up reliever Jacob Perry for four runs in the sixth to extend a three-run lead for a Division II-A district decision.

CPA banged out nine hits against Tears, Perry and Mason Raffauf. Damon Toombs led the host Bulldogs with a pair of hits.

Columbia Acad. 10, Summit 0 (5 inn.): Behind a 14-hit attack, the Lady Bulldogs stunned visiting Class AAA foe Summit. Kennedy Chatman and Abbigail Adkins each had three hits, with Chatman, Chloe Carter (three RBIs) and Karley Harakas each contributing doubles.

Averi Slaughter earned the complete game victory, striking out four and scattering three hits over five innings.

Cornersville 5, Santa Fe 5 (5 inn.): Rachel Dodson, Lexi McEwen and Shelby Rector had two hits apiece for the host Lady Wildcats in a contest that was stopped for darkness.

Lewis Co. 12, Culleoka 5: Alex Skinner went 3-for-4 and Alyssa Beckenbach added a pair of hits for the Lady Warriors in the loss.

CA netters sweep: Columbia Academy’s boys and girls tennis teams each defeated East Hickman 7-0. Miles Nixon and Daniel Thomas led the way, each winning 8-0 in singles and pairing for an 8-0 doubles victory. For the Lady Bulldogs, Piper Brock won 8-0 at No. 1 singles.
