Barbara Campbell

Legendary Brentwood volleyball coach Barbara Campbell was included on an elite list pieced together by MaxPreps.com recently.

Campbell, who has guided the Lady Bruins to a state record seven consecutive Class AAA state titles, earned the nod from the athletics website as one of the top 100 coaches in high school. MaxPreps.com released the list on Friday and said they wanted to “identify 100 of the top high school coaches in the country.”

Campbell definitely fits the mold.

She’s coached 32 seasons at Brentwood and built an unprecedented tradition in the sport with 15 state championships and seven runner-up trophies. Campbell has produced a 1,728-295 record with the Lady Bruins – an incredible .854 winning percentage with her teams advancing to the state tournament 27 of her 32 years.

Her win total ranks third all-time nationally.

“I love witnessing the girls competing for position, working through adversity, growing in leadership and displaying unselfish team attitudes,” Campbell said in a Living Legacy feature with Southern Exposure Magazine. “I have been very blessed to coach at Brentwood High School with a very supportive administration, dedicated assistant coaches, parents who sacrifice to give their daughters opportunities for success and goal-oriented players who buy into the Brentwood volleyball tradition.”

Campbell was named the Williamson Herald’s Coach of the Decade in December after leading the Lady Bruins to the championship match every season since 2012.

MaxPreps.com included three other Tennessee coaches: Matt Buckner, who has won four state titles with the Farragut baseball team and nearly 600 wins with the Admirals; Gary Rankin, the winningest football coach in state history who has led Alcoa to five straight championships; and Lamar Rogers of Clarkrange, the winningest basketball coach in state history with more 1,240 wins in 43 seasons.
