Springfield High School has found a new leader for its volleyball program.

Coach Daniel Owsley recently stepped down to focus his time on softball, opening the door for the Yellow Jackets to hire veteran coach Ann-Marie Cobb to lead the team.

Cobb spent four seasons as the head coach at Archer High School in Lawrenceville, Georgia, before her husband, Gary, took a job with HCA Healthcare in Nashville two years ago. Since then, Cobb has taught special education at Mt. Juliet High School while looking for volleyball coaching opportunities.

“I was looking to get back into coaching high school again,” she said. “I missed it. I’ve been trying to find my way into high school volleyball since I moved here.”

Cobb assisted at the University School of Nashville last season when its volleyball coach, Lauren Cox, was out on maternity leave. She also led a C2 Attack club team, but their season was cut short by the coronavirus.

Cobb has an extensive volleyball background, including a successful high school career that led her to playing five seasons at Georgia State. But her coaching pursuits were put on hold to raise her four children.

“When you’re trying to raise a family, you’re doing what’s best for them first,” said Cobb, who took the Archer job in 2014.

Her two sets of twins, all of whom are now in their 20s, attended Archer and lived less than two miles from the school. Archer is located on the outskirts of the populous Atlanta suburbs, offering a “great community feeling” Cobb hopes to regain in Springfield.

“I like that Springfield seems like a small town,” she said. “We’ve driven up there a few times just to get a lay of the land. I love it there.”

Springfield is coming off a 2019 season that included a 27-14 record and a loss to White House Heritage in the District 11-AA tournament semifinals. Morgan Dorris, Madison Dubowsky and Jacie Greer all graduate this month.

However, 2019 All-Robertson County selections Morgan Gunn and Sarah Nicholson return for their senior and junior campaigns, respectively. 2018 All-County honoree Jessie Seeley will also be back for her senior year.

When training for the 2020 season can begin is still a question mark. The TSSAA has left summer schedule decisions to the individual school districts.

“I have no idea what is coming,” Cobb said. “I really don’t know what they are planning. It’s hard to make plans during a time like this.”
