Playing volleyball, basketball and softball, Katie Wallin has been a big part of the Morristown West athletic program during her high school career.
While considered a great all-around athlete, volleyball has been Wallin’s true passion. And, this week, she made her college decision official, committing to Maryville College.
The atmosphere at Maryville was a huge selling point for Wallin as well as being able to stay close to home.
“I am really excited and very thankful,” Wallin said. “Coach (Candace) Schram is just very welcoming and the staff and players were as well. It just felt like a great community to be a part of.”
A three-sport athlete, Wallin found great success on the volleyball court. During her senior season, the Lady Trojans went 15-14, winning the regular season district title and making it all the way to the Region Semifinals before falling to Daniel Boone.
During the season, Wallin broke the school record for assists in a match with 67 against Morristown East in a 3-0 win. The record she broke was her own, set with 61 assists against Jefferson County early in the year.
“I just loved playing with great teammates,” Wallin said. “I had great coaches all four years, and it was just a really great experience having such great teammates that I have been playing with my whole life.”
Wallin will be joining a Maryville College program that was dominant last season, going 27-7 and 14-0 in conference play. The Scots won the USA South Conference Tournament and made it to the NCAA Regionals before falling to Berry College.
The Scots graduate seven seniors from last year’s team, giving Wallin a good chance to compete for playing time her freshman year.
“I just need to work on all aspects of my game,” Wallin said. “I feel like I can really work on my defense and work on my hands a little more. Just get a little used to the speed of the game and getting better at setting from anywhere on the court.”
For Now, Wallin is focusing on the task at hand, staying in shape as she prepares for her freshman season. Wallin said that Schram has put them on a six-week training program to stay in shape during this time.
It’s been a different few months for Wallin. After playing sports year round for years, now she is playing the waiting game.
“It’s been a lot different,” Wallin said. “For the last six years, I have done nothing but played sports. I have had a practice, a workout or something to do each day. And now for the past few months, I have really done nothing. It has just been very weird. “
