East’s Harris signs with Cleveland State

However, that feeling was short-lived for Harris.

Last week, Harris announced that her softball journey would continue, committing to Cleveland State.

“I am excited about it, especially with what is going on getting our senior season cut short,” Harris said. “I am relieved to know that I still get to play and relieved to be committed and know where I am going. I knew I was going to play in college, but I wasn’t sure where.”

It was the connection Harris had with the coaching staff that sold her on Cleveland State as well as the proximity to home. The trip from Morristown to Cleveland State is a little under two hours.

“The coaches seemed like they really liked me and were encouraging me to come there,” Harris said.

Harris’ journey to Cleveland State caps off a successful four years at Morristown East.

During her three full seasons, the Lady ‘Canes made three straight sub-state appearances.

During her junior season, East went 33-7 and 12-0 in the district. Harris hit .423 with eight home runs and 43 RBIs. The Lady ‘Canes won the District regular season and tournament title.

“I’ll always remember that I came off a winning team, we always did really good and that we were competitive,” Harris said. “They helped me to stay competitive in every game that I play.”

Despite missing her senior season, the softball grind continues for Harris as she will be playing travel ball in the summer, something she hopes will make for a smooth transition into college play.

“I just need to work on staying consistent and always do my best when I play,” Harris said. “I’ll still be playing travel ball in the summer, so the seasons will go straight into each other. I just need to be ready to compete at the best level that I can.”

Before Harris officially closes the door on her high school career and moves onto the college level, there is still one thing left to do.

Earlier in the week, Dr. Jeff Perry, Hamblen County school superintendent, announced that the county would be putting together “one last game” for the senior athletes.

The players can take pictures in their uniforms after the game.

For Harris and the rest of the softball seniors, that means the chance to take one final swing for Morristown East.

“I am really glad about that and fortunate,” Harris said. “I know that they don’t have to do that, and they are making an opportunity for us to get to play one last time. I am very happy about that.”
