The search is on for a girls basketball coach at La Vergne after longtime coach Kim Walker resigned to take a position with Rutherford County Schools.

Walker, who had coached in the area the past 23 years and was the Lady Wolverines' head coach the past 10 years, will remain at the school as a teacher and will begin a new role with RCS as a safety coach.

"I would like to thank Mr. (former principal Dirk) Ash, the administration, faculty, staff and especially the players for their support and commitment over the past 10 years," Walker said. "I look forward to supporting the current players and future staff as a faculty member and fan."

La Vergne did not advance past the district tournament under Walker.

Walker is a lifelong area resident, having been a basketball standout at Oakland before graduating in 1991. She was inducted into the OHS basketball Hall of Fame in 2019.

Longtime La Vergne girls basketball coach Kim Walker has resigned her position to take on a role as a safety coach for Rutherford County Schools.

"We appreciate Coach Walker giving LHS girls basketball 10 years of service as head coach," said Ash. "I believe her No. 1 goal was to make a difference in those kids' lives during and after basketball, which I know she did.

"She built character in her kids and led them to become better players and people. She often played talented teams, pushing her players to compete to the best of their abilities. We wish her continued success in her new position."

Stewarts Creek names volleyball coach

Stewarts Creek recently named Kniambi Jarrett-Walker volleyball coach.

Jarrett-Walker replaces Mary Dayton, who started the Lady Red Hawks program when the school opened in 2014. Dayton is now at Stewarts Creek Middle.

A San Diego native, Jarrett-Walker played volleyball at Athens (Ala.) High and then in college at Wallace State and Tennessee State.

She has 13 years of volleyball coaching experience at the club, middle school and high school levels. She was most recently head coach at Danville (Ala.) High, where her teams won four area championships and reached two state final four appearances during her five seasons.

"I love volleyball ... it has afforded me many opportunities I probably wouldn’t have had otherwise," Jarrett-Walker said. "I love coaching because it gives me an opportunity to pay it forward and help others reach their goals. I love playing indoor and sand volleyball (sand is my favorite). I’m excited to come to Stewarts Creek High."
