Former Tennessee Titans and LSU quarterback Zach Mettenberger has entered the Nashville high school football coaching ranks.

Mettenberger has been named the offensive coordinator at Hillsboro, replacing first-year East Nashville coach Jamaal Stewart.

Hillsboro coach Maurice Fitzgerald said Mettenberger will be joined by former Pearl-Cohn wide receiver Rashad Mason on the staff. Mason was the offensive coordinator at East Nashville in 2019.

"I think those two guys work well together," Fitzgerald said. "It's been kind of funny. We have two additions to the staff and they work so well together.

"He's not coaching over their heads. He enjoys what he's doing. Really, it's like he's been here for a few years to be honest."

Pearl-Cohn quarterback Jalen Macon threw for more than 1,200 yards as a junior.

"He's helped him 100 times more than what we would have been teaching him, that's for sure," Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said Mettenberger approached the school about being interested in coaching while he was still playing professional football. He played quarterback for the Memphis Express for the AAF last spring before it folded.

Titans quarterback Zach Mettenberger warms up before a game against the Texans last season.

"He talked like he was probably not going to keep pursuing that," Fitzgerald said. "He just asked, 'Can I just be involved?' It wasn't just being a coordinator. It has panned out. He's real, real good with the kids."

Mettenberger was drafted by the Titans out of LSU in the sixth round in 2014. He played two seasons with the Titans. He started 10 games and had 2,347 passing yards with 12 touchdowns and 14 interceptions over the next two seasons. He started three games with the Memphis Express in their lone season.
