The Memphis Academy of Science and Engineering has hired Cedric Miller as its next football coach, according to executive director Rod Gaston. Miller replaces Julius Jackson, who stepped down. He'll remain athletic director at MASE.

"We just look forward to building that highly, competitive program at MASE and just add on to what coach Julius Jackson has already built," Gaston said Tuesday.

Miller was the former coach and athletic director at the Memphis Academy of Health and Science. With MAHS closing at the end of the school year, Miller found a new home at MASE.

"My job is to come in and pick up where coach Jackson has left off and try to make that program one of the elite programs in 1A in the state of Tennessee," Miller said.

MASE started its football program five years ago and has made the Class 1A state playoffs three of the last four years with its lone win over Greenfield in 2019.

"My expectation is to win state championships," Gaston said. "... We're looking forward to building that foundation and developing our young men."

Miller led MAHS to the state playoffs five of the seven years he coached the Lions. He took over the football program in 2015. Miller led MAHS to the quarterfinals this past season, falling to the eventual state champion Westview 16-0.

He's looking to bring the same passion he had at MAHS to MASE.

"Wherever I put my feet and plant myself, I give my all to it," Miller said. "MASE is going to get the same love, the same respect and the same effort as I put into MAHS."
