Down inside your own ten-yard line, not great. Oh, and it’s 3rd down, well that’s not great either. Oh and not to mention there are over 20 yards to gain!
Yeah… not great.
In Chattanooga’s prep scene, this scenario would draw the card of a safe play. The don’t hurt yourself more than you need to type of play. Take a short gain, with perhaps a run up the middle, punt the ball, and get out of there. But Chattanooga Central Head Coach, Curt Jones, just so happened to have a different frame of mind.
Why not throw it?
Coach Jones chose to send his players deep, and to say the least, it paid off. Quarterback, Caden Jones, on the long third down, threw a perfect ball into Ronye’ Watson’s hands for 37 yards and a first down. Jones would go on to throw two more 20-yard plus completions on this drive, with the latter of the two being a 26-yard TD strike to, Houston Boykin. This drive would give the Purple Pounders a two-TD advantage and would help them on their way to a 28-14 win over Soddy Daisy.
It was made very evident on this drive that Coach Jones had an overflow of confidence in his QB. And who can blame him? The quarterback Jones throughout the night stepped up and delivered in these types of situations, to help his teammates win, and to also help his dad win. His dad being Coach Curt Jones of Chattanooga Central of course, and a proud dad at that.
“It’s fun kind of being able to watch him go out here and have success as a sophomore. And you know he couldn’t do it without the offensive line, and he couldn’t do it without Ronye’, Houston, Tristan, and all of the other cats out there. We’re excited," Coach Jones said.
As just a sophomore Jones made a pivotal impact on this game and showed that he has the ability to help his team produce wins. Another guy who helps the Pounders produce wins is no other than #7, Watson.
Watson had a blockbuster game and showed off his dynamic skillset through all four quarters in this contest. He gained 161 yards on the ground, while also going for 66 yards in the air. Watson went for 227 yards total and accounted for 58% of his team's total offense.
“Ronye’ is our heart and soul. Whether it’s on offense, whether he’s playing running back, receiver, wildcat, or quarterback. I mean that young man, he’s the engine that makes us go”, said Coach Jones.
And what a great engine to have. In this contest, Chattanooga Central picked up their first win of the season after starting 0-4. And although it has been a less-than-ideal start for the Pounders, there is still plenty of ball left to play.
They look to continue to piece this season back together, as they take on the Meigs County Tigers in an inter-division matchup next Friday night.
