The Henry County Patriots got down to business quickly after the Homecoming 2023 festivities Friday Night at Patriot Stadium.
They scored early and often on their way to a 63-12 win over Region 7-5A rival Hunters Lane.
The Patriots put the game away early, allowing young players to get valuable playing experience for later down the road.
James Bobbitt rang up Henry County’s first score with a 1-yard touchdown run with 9:25 left in the first quarter. The extra point by placekicker Killian Snow made it 7-0 for the Patriots.
On the next possession, Rush Cox took a 20-yard pass from Caden Marshall into the end zone with the extra point good for a 14-0 Patriot lead with 4:35 left in the opening quarter.
What happened next was nothing short of an offensive explosion in the final four minutes of the first quarter.
Carvarious Bowers got loose for the Warriors, sprinting 69 yards for a score with 1:10 left in the opening quarter. Hunters Lane’s two-point conversion attempt failed, cutting the score to 14-6.
The Patriots answered with a 42-yard Marshall to Brock Beddies touchdown. The PAT made it a 21-6 lead with 28 seconds left in the period.
Hunters Lane came right back with a 23-yard touchdown pass from Isaiah McGill to Lazavian Grady. The Patriots swarmed the two-point conversion attempt with the score changing to 21-12 with 13 seconds left.
Just when it looked like the quarter was ending, Evan Richardson took the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to the house for the Patriots’ fourth score of the quarter.
The extra point was good for a 28-12 lead with 4 seconds left in the quarter.
Henry County’s first possession of the second quarter came with about 11 minutes left, resulting in another Bobbitt touchdown from 4 yards out. The PAT was good for a 35-12 lead with 8:50 left until halftime.
On the next Big Red possession it was back to the end zone again, this time on a 5-yard Jaaron Lewis touchdown pass from Marshall. The extra point was good with 3:49 left and the Pats led, 42-12. I
t became 49-12 on the next possession, when Marshall got the call and took it 5 yards for a score. The extra point was again good with 2:38 left until halftime.
Henry County crossed the 50-point mark on a 7-yard Lavon Tharpe touchdown with 39 ticks left and a completed extra point to lead 56-12.
After halftime, substitutes began coming in and they wanted in on the action, so with 9:50 left in the third quarter, backup quarterback Jacob Paschall found the end zone for the Patriots final score. The extra point was good for a 63-12 lead.
Both teams sent in their younger players for playing time as the seniors and juniors celebrated Homecoming on the sideline until the game ended.
Sophomore Snow went to work tying a school record, hitting 9 of 9 extra points, tying a record set by Bailey Armas in 2016.
Henry County improved to 4-1 on the year with a 2-0 record in Region 7-5A.
Next week, the Patriots start a three-game road stretch that will wrap up their regular season road schedule with a trip to Clarksville Northeast next Friday night, followed by trips to Portland and Beech.
