SPRING HILL – Coming off the bench for the first time this season, Summit guard Derrick Smith was a little nervous when Spartans coach Thad Burgess drew up a play in the final seconds of overtime against Ravenwood.

You couldn't tell from the way Smith dribbled right for a pull-up 3-pointer that he buried at the buzzer that stunned the Raptors, giving Summit a 62-61 win over Tuesday at Summit High School.

"It's not that I didn't think I could hit it, but I wasn't in any flow during the course of the game so I was a little nervous knowing I'd get the last shot," Smith said. "But Ravenwood had been sagging off on screens all game and I knew I might have a decent look."

Mehki Bell set the screen at the 3-point line with 5 seconds left in overtime and Smith dribbled to his right. Ravenwood defender, Evan Gainer, tried to go under the screen but he was late closing out on Smith who released the ball with a clean look that dropped through the net.

Smith backed up toward Ravenwood's bench as his teammate rushed the court to celebrate. Summit improved to 8-8 while Ravenwood, ranked No. 1 in The Tennessean's Large Class rankings, fell to 15-2.

"Ravenwood has won 15 games already this year so we knew this was a great team," said Smith, who finished with 12 points. "We played well in the first half. They played well in the second half and we were one point better in OT."

Ravenwood erased a nine-point halftime deficit and led by as many as seven in the second half before Summit climbed back in it. Smith's lay up beat the buzzer to send the game into overtime with both teams tied at 52.

"We just drew up some great plays at the end of regulation and overtime and executed them."
