Last Friday, the White County High School Warriors and Warriorettes opened district play when they traveled to Smithville to take on the DeKalb County Tigers.
The Warriorettes played and won the first game by a final score of 80-49. The game was actually much more competitive than the score indi-cates. DeKalb County began the game hot and led the game 12-20 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Warriorettes began to find their groove of-fensively and defensively rallying to take a 39-32 lead at the half. The game remained fairly competitive in the third quarter, but the Warri-orettes were too much for DeKalb County to overcome.
When the fourth quarter began, the Warriorettes had a 56-43 lead and then absolutely ran away with it going on a 24-6 run to end the game.
Several Warriorettes had great games including junior Ava Jones who led the team in scoring with 23 points, which included a perfect 11-11 from the free throw line. Jones also had eight rebounds, three assists, and three blocked shots on the night. Senior Celeste Reed recorded yet another double-double, scoring 14 points and amassing an incredible 17 boards. Other Warriorettes who scored double-digit points in the game included sophomore Bella Winningham with 13, sophomore Lakelyn Grasty with 12, and freshman Ashlyn Selby with 10 who made every shot she attempted shooting a perfect 100 percent on the night.
The win improved the Warriorettes overall record to 18-1 and 1-0 in the district. They are currently ranked 15th in the state and third in Class 3A.
The Warriors played in the nightcap and also got off to a slow start, ending the first quarter down 8-14.
The Tigers opened up the second quarter with a 3-point shot, extending their lead to 9. This was their biggest lead of the night and from this point, the Warriors began to take control. The Warriors went on a 16-4 run to end the half up 24-21. Whatever Coach Eric Mitchell said to the Warriors during half-time was apparently exactly what they needed to hear because they dominated the game in the third quarter, piling on 23 points to the Tigers’ five, which extended their lead to 21 points. From there, the Warriors cruised to the win, with a final score of 61-38.
Junior Lucas Dickerson led the Warriors with 20 points, which included six buckets from beyond the arc. Junior Tripp Pinion logged a stellar performance with 13 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists. Junior Gage Stephenson also scored 13 points and had five boards, while freshman Cole Sims put up 10 points and dished out six assists. The Warriors big win puts them at 1-0 in district play and 5-7 overall.
The Warriors and Warriorettes continue district play as they are slated to host Stone Memorial, on Jan. 9, and Cumberland County Jets, on Jan. 12.
