CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Northwest High Vikings unified bowling team won the TSSAA state runner up in their first ever season of the sport, which happens to be the first season TSSAA sanctioned the sport.

“Regular bowling has been around for years.” said Northwest High head coach Cristy Guevara. “However, this year was the first time TSSAA sponsored unified bowling, which is a mix between special education and general education students.”

For the kids that joined, it was a last second endeavor, as they formed their team days before the deadline.

“We formed our bowling team days before the final roster had to be posted,” said Guevara. “We’re just excited to have a team and build it. Right now, there’s only two schools in the district, us and Kenwood, so we’d like to see more schools get involved.”

The bowling at the state tournament was nothing like the recreational bowling people often do. It was an electric, rowdy and competitive atmosphere, with tons of fans and a lot of cheering, according to Guevara.

“The Majority of our kids don’t play any other sports, so it was awesome to see them, and have their parents see them, in a competitive atmosphere.” said Guevara. “There are bleachers on both sides of the alley, and it was intense every match. If you’re into bowling, there’s a place for you here.”
