The White County High School Warriorette basketball team traveled to Crossville to take on Stone Memorial, on Jan. 30, and then the Cumberland County Lady Jets, on Feb. 2. The Warriorettes looked to avenge their only district loss which was to Stone Memorial earlier in the season and continue their winning ways to keep their hold on first place in the district.
The Warriorettes and the Lady Panthers of Stone Memorial both came out firing, with the Warriorettes gaining an early advantage up 18-12 after the first quarter.
In the second quarter, however, it was all Warriorettes as they went on a 17-9 to end the first half, extending their lead to 14.
The Lady Panthers came out in the second half strong, but the Warriorettes matched them and never relinquished their hold on the game and won convincingly 73-56.
Five different Warriorettes scored double-digit points and played great games. Senior Celeste Reed put up another stellar performance, ending with another double-double, scoring 14 points, and pulling down 10 boards. Sophomores Gracie Clark and Lakelyn Grasty led the Warriorettes with 16 points each. Grasty also led the Warriorettes with seven assists. Junior Ava Jones put up another solid performance with 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals, and four blocked shots. Sophomore Bella Winningham scored 11.
Friday’s game against the Lady Jets was an overtime thriller. The game was a physical battle that remained close the entire time and resulted in three Warriorettes fouling out.
At halftime, the Warriorettes were down by 2 and as many as 8 in the fourth quarter but rallied to tie the game at the end of regulation.
Overtime saw the same back-and-forth scoring and defensive stops that were present for the entirety of the game. With under a minute to play, down by 1 and without Celeste Reed, Ava Jones, or Gracie Clark (fouled out), Lakelyn Grasty seized the moment with a floater in the paint to put the Warriorettes up by 1, with 33 seconds left in overtime play. The Warriorettes held the Lady Jets from there and won by a final score of 53-52.
Celeste Reed led the Warriorettes with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Ava Jones scored 11, pulled down seven boards, and blocked two shots. Freshman Ashlyn Selby came up big with 8 points and eight rebounds. Gracie Clark scored 8, Bella Winningham had 6 points, and Lakelyn Gasty scored 4.
The Warriorettes improved their record to 24-2 overall but, more importantly, 7-1 in district play, keeping them in first place.
