KINGSPORT — Caroline Hill proved to be the difference for Dobyns-Bennett on Friday night.
Hill kept her senior season — and the Lady Indians — going by scoring 21 points in D-B’s 56-42 win over Jefferson County in the Region 1-4A basketball quarterfinals at the Tribe Athletic Complex.
“It’s a big deal (to play at home),” D-B coach Bill Francis said. “It’s a definite advantage to get to that district championship and host that game on your floor. ... It allows for a little more of a routine.”
The Lady Indians took a one-point lead, 14-13, after the first quarter, spearheaded by Hill — whose seven points accounted for half of her team’s output through the first eight minutes.
Jefferson County battled to stay right there, however, and forced the District 1-4A champions to briefly relinquish the advantage.
A 7-0 Tribe run midway through the period gave the home team the edge again, but, just like in the opening quarter, the Lady Patriots kept within arm’s length.
The Lady Indians went into halftime with a 26-20 lead, Hill topping all scorers with 10 points and Brylee Lindsey putting up six on her ledger for the Lady Patriots.
It was Hill again leading the Lady Indians’ charge out of intermission, putting up 11 in the third quarter. Bolstered by her flurry, D-B outscored Jefferson County in the third and enjoyed a 40-29 cushion heading into the final eight minutes.
“(Hill) is just a gamer, man,” Francis said. “She is going to bring it. That kid is hungry right now. I think all of our kids are, but she is locked in.
“When you get a great player like that locked in, it’s hard to stop it.”
The fourth quarter saw the Lady Indians put the game on cruise control, allowing for younger players to see playing time in the closing minutes.
Kaydence Black joined Hill in double digits with 11 points and Payton Moore added nine.
Wofford signee Madi Hawk led the Lady Patriots with 11.
