The Huntland High School Lady Hornets lost to the Cornersville Lady Bulldogs 45-30 on the road Friday in a quarterfinal game for the Region 5A tournament.
The Lady Hornets held a small early advantage in the contest, but the Lady Bulldogs took control of the scoreboard in the third quarter and pulled away in the fourth to end Huntland’s season.
The Lady Hornets allowed just two total points in the opening period as they were able to jump out to an early lead.
They led 10-2 after one quarter.
The Lady Bulldogs tightened the score in the second quarter, but the Lady Hornets were able to take a one-possession advantage into the halftime break. Yareli Avalos scored six of Huntland’s eight points in the second quarter.
Huntland led 18-16 at halftime.
The scoreboard would be flipped in the third quarter as the Lady Bulldogs found their offensive footing and put the Lady Hornets in a decent hole.
Huntland trailed 29-22 going into the final period.
The Lady Hornets weren’t able to make up any ground in the fourth quarter as they went on to lose by 15.
Avalos led the Lady Hornets with 11 points for the game, followed by Jocy May with eight points and Maddie Burks with five.
Bailey Morris and Aysia Williams scored three points each.
With the loss, the Lady Hornets finished their season with a record of 11-17.
