For the first time since 2014, the Region 1-A Tournament Championship trophy is heading to Roan Mountain.

The Lady ‘Landers outlasted North Greene for a 26-17 victory in the Region 1-A Championship game on Wednesday night at West Ridge High School.

With the win, Cloudland will host Sunbright on Saturday for a Class A Sectional contest with a berth in the TSSAA State Tournament on the line. North Greene is set to travel to Midway for their Class A Sectional.

Points were hard to come by on Wednesday night.

North Greene was very methodical with their opening possessions, but Ryan Turbyfill hit two early shots to give CHS a 4-0 lead. After North Greene’s Heidi Harmon hit a bucket to get North Greene on the board, Izabella Christman answered with a Cloudland basket.
The Lady ‘Landers led 6-2 after a quarter of play.

Makinna Shell opened the second quarter with a jumper, but neither team was able to get on the board as possessions continued to be methodical. Mercy Buchanan hit a jumper for NG with 4:29 left to play in the half.

After a three-minute scoring drought for both teams, Makenzie Street hit a runner to push the Cloudland lead to 10-4 at the half.

The second half continued to be a defensive battle.

Turbyfill scored five of the first seven points of the half with North Greene’s Ella Head adding the other basket. Shell pushed the CHS lead to double-digits, and the Lady ‘Landers maintained an 18-8 lead after three complete quarters.

After North Greene’s Harmon opened the fourth quarter scoring with a jumper, Shell and Street hit back-to-back shots, and Saharra McKinney capped off a 6-2 Cloudland run.

Christman answered a Head basket as Cloudland was able to keep the Lady Huskies at bay.

Turbyfill led Cloudland with nine points, while Shell had six points. Street and Christman added four points, while McKinney scored three points.

McKinney was named the Region 1-A Tournament MVP, while Turbyfill, Shell, and Christman joined her on the Region 1-A All-Tournament team.

Head scored seven points to pace NG, while Harmon added six points.

Hannah Miller, Harmon, and Head represented the Lady Huskies on the All-Tournament squad.
