The Walker Valley tennis courts are buzzing with excitement as 2024 Mustangs eagerly anticipates the kickoff of the 2024 tennis season. Both the boys and girls teams are poised for success, each with their unique storylines that promise a thrilling journey on the courts.
Boys Team
Aims for
Redemption
Fresh off a strong showing in the 2023, the Walker Valley boys tennis team is fueled by the desire for redemption.
Last year, with only two seniors, the team reached the State Sectional round before facing a setback against Hendorsonville.
Determined to take the next step this season, newly named head coach and former Bradley Central and Vanderbilt Tennis standout Eddie Coates and his team are focused on honing their skills and strategies to make a serious run at the TSSAA State Tournament.
"We have a talented group of guys who have been working incredibly hard during the off-season. Losing in the State Sectional round last year was tough, but it has motivated us to push ourselves even further this season. Our goal is clear – we want to take the next step and compete at the highest level," says Coach Coates.
The boys team boasts a mix of seasoned players with four of the top six returning, and emerging talents, as several new additions will create a dynamic roster that has the potential to make waves in the state tennis scene.
With a strong emphasis on teamwork and individual growth, the Walker Valley boys are ready to showcase their skills and determination on the court.
Key to the boys success will be seniors Jose Guerrero, Cash Coates, and Sam Taylor who will be counted on to use their experience as the foundation for a successful season.
Guerrero returns as one of the top talents for the Mustangs, while Coates is rejoining the program following a successful stint on the basketball court.
Sophomores Mitch Brown, Cael Coates, and Turner Clayton are also returning following their contributions to the lineup their freshman season, with the later two also being hoop standouts.
Lady Mustangs
Eye State
Team Tournament
On the girls' side, anticipation is high as the team looks to build on last year's successes.
The Walker Valley girls tennis team returns its core roster, with only one senior, and is well-positioned to make a formidable run towards the TSSAA State Team Tournament for the first time since their Final Four finish in 2006.
"Lots of excitement with our returning players and they've shown tremendous commitment to their game which has helped show our new players how to compete. Our focus is on teamwork, and we believe this season, we have the depth and talent to make a significant impact in the state competition," comments Coach Coates.
Anderson. University (S.C.) signee Ensley Collins, who finished as the individual 2023 TSSAA State Tournament Runner Up, is poised for a fourth trip to Murfreesboro and help lead her team there as well.
"Ensley is a great competitor, and her accomplishments speak volumes about her dedication and work ethic. Her leadership on the team is invaluable, and we're excited to see her excel and contribute to our team goals," adds Coach Coates.
Junior Ella Klepzig joins sophomores Caileigh Collins and Libbi Dunkle to anchor the returning members of last year’s starting lineup as several newcomers will be looking to contribute for the Lady Mustangs.
