Huntland's Daltyn Howell goes into his pitching delivery during a game Monday against Moore County High School. Howell pitched a complete game with six strikeouts, two hits, three walks and one unearned run allowed in the 4-1 win.
The Huntland High School Hornets beat the Moore County Raiders 4-1 at home Monday for their fifth win of the season.
The Hornets did all of their scoring in the fourth inning with a strong pitching performance from Daltyn Howell helping to hold the rival Raiders at bay throughout the district matchup.
Huntland head baseball coach Brent Davis said that Howell pitched very well with the rest of the Hornets doing a solid job of supporting him defensively.
“(Howell) just controlled the game on the bump, and then the kids made plays behind him. I think we had two throwing errors that led to one run, but other than that, everything was clean. Everything was what we wanted,” he said. “The boys played well tonight.”
Neither team got a runner into scoring position through the first three innings as both pitchers were in full control early.
The Hornets loaded the bases with only one out in the bottom of the fourth with Landon Kerr singling and Carter Walker and Matthew Dickson both drawing walks.
Following a strikeout of Howell for the second out of the frame, Caleb Maxwell and Blaine Counts both drew walks to record one RBI each, and Chandler Banks came through with a two-out, two-run single to make it a 4-0 game at the contest’s halfway point.
The Raiders got on the board in the top of the sixth as their leadoff hitter for the inning drew a walk, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored off of a throwing error to put the score at 4-1 late.
The Raiders had a runner reach base with a two-out single in the top of the seventh to put the potential tying run on deck, but the next hitter flew out to end the game and give the Hornets the win by three.
Howell pitched a complete game for Huntland with six strikeouts, two hits, three walks and one unearned run allowed in the victory.
With the win, the Hornets improved to 5-5 on the season and 1-0 in district play.
They will next play Wednesday at Moore County High School. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
