On Monday night, the CCCHS Red Raiders lost both games of a doubleheader at Spring Hill, losing the first game 9-8 in extra innings and falling in the second game, 5-3.
CCCHS Red Raiders: 8, Spring Hill Raiders: 9
The first game of the night proved to be a close contest.
Spring Hill would score three runs in the opening inning to take an early 3-0 lead.
Coffee County would score twice in the top of the second with Colter Neel scoring on a Brendon Sheppard single and Blake Hillis scoring on a Trevor Jesse walk to make the score 3-2, then Spring Hill answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to lead 5-2.
Neither team would score in the third and fourth innings, then the Red Raiders scored two runs in the top of the fifth inning as Cole Pippenger scored on a line drive single by Nate Rutledge and Bird Fellers scored on a passed ball to cut the Spring Hill lead to 5-4.
Spring Hill would extend the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs to go up 8-4.
However, the Red Raiders would not go away quietly, as Trevor Jesse scored on a sacrifice fly from Nate Rutledge to make the score 8-5, then Colter Neel fired off a three-run homer to left field to tie the game at 8-8 in the top of the seventh inning.
Spring Hill would not manage to score in the bottom of the seventh, and the game went into extra innings.
Neither team could break through in the eighth inning, but in the ninth, Spring Hill hit a solo home run to win the game, 9-8.
For Coffee County, Colter Neel would have two hits, including his three-run home run, Nate Rutledge had one hit and two RBIs, Brendon Sheppard had one hit and one RBI, Trevor Jesse had one RBI, Blake Hillis had two hits and Cole Pippenger along with Bird Fellers each had one hit.
Three pitchers made an appearance in the game for Coffee County, with Timothy Henderson getting the start, pitching two innings, allowing five runs on four hits, striking out four batters and walking one on 47 pitches. Brady Daugherty would pitch 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out five batters and walking four on 73 pitches and Davis McKenzie would get credit for the loss, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing one run on one hit, striking out three batters and walking two on 44 pitches.
CCCHS Red Raiders: 3, Spring Hill Raiders: 5
The Red Raiders would take an early lead in the second game, as Cole Pippenger scored on an error by the catcher to give Coffee County a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Neither team would score in the second or third inning, then Spring Hill scored three runs in the top of the fourth inning to take the lead, 3-1.
Coffee County would make it a 3-2 game in the bottom of the fifth as Pippenger scored again, this time on a wild pitch, but Spring Hill would further their lead in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs to lead 5-2.
The Red Raiders would get one back in the bottom of the seventh inning, as Bird Fellers scored on a Trey Turner walk to make the score 5-3, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Red Raiders dropped their second contest of the night.
Trey Turner had one RBI, Cole Pippenger had two hits and Trevor Jesse had one hit for the Red Raiders.
Bird Fellers would get the loss on the mound, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on six hits, striking out one batter and walking three on 76 pitches. Timothy Henderson would pitch 2.1 innings in relief, allowing two runs on two hits, striking out four batters and walking two on 42 pitches, and Cole Pippenger pitched 1.1 innings, allowing just one hit and striking out four batters on 31 pitches.
Coffee County will look to get back in the win column when they play host to Tullahoma in a non-district contest on Friday, Apr. 12 at 6:00 pm.
