CORRYTON — For the second straight weekend, the Cleveland softball Lady Raiders went 2-2 in tournament play.
After opening wins over CAK and White County Friday, beating the two Lady Warrior squads by a combined 14-2 tally, Coach KJ Harris' crew ran into a pair of Top 3-ranked teams in Waverly and host Gibbs Saturday.
Ranked 20th in the Maxpreps Class 4A state poll, Cleveland (13-10, 1-0) will return to District 5-4A play Tuesday at Rhea County. The Lady Raiders return to Brenda Lawson Field Thursday to entertain East Hamilton.
Roane State signee Ashley Allen fired a four-hit shutout, striking out seven CAK batters and walking just one in the four-inning contest.
Scoring in each of its final three at bats, Cleveland rallied for a pair of 3-spots in the second and fourth frames to secure the victory.
Landri Nelson went 2-for-2, including a triple with an RBI and a run scored to pace the victory.
Allen drew a trio of free passes and came around to score twice, while Lilly Mason stroked a double and plated a pair of teammates.
Reagan Campbell and Allison Farnsworth helped out with run-scoring hits as well.
Freshman Emily Patterson gave up just a pair of hits in a complete-game pitching effort, plus knocked a pair of hits at the dish.
Furman commit Lily O'Bryan, Nelson and Farnsworth each went 3-for-3 and scored twice in the victory, with O'Bryan and Farnsworth both "going yard."
Farnsworth drove in four runs, while Campbell and O'Bryan had a "ribbie" apiece.
Ranked third in the Class 2A poll, Waverly took control early, scoring in four frames to build a 6-0 edge before Cleveland was able to get on the board with a single run in the bottom of the fifth.
The Lady Raiders managed just three hits, all singles from O'Bryan, Allen and Mason, with Ja'Maya Hill scoring the lone run.
Ranked No. 2 in Class 3A, Gibbs jumped out with a pair of runs in its first at bat, and then added their final score in the second frame.
Cleveland scored its run in the top of the final frame.
O'Bryan went 2-for-3 at the dish, including a double, while Farnsworth had a RBI-single. Alexis Folts, Campbell and Hill each helped out with a hit, with Campbell scoring the run.
