CLARKSVILLE, TN (CLARKSVILLE NOW) – The Clarksville Academy Cougars softball team hosted the Ezell-Harding Eagles for a district matchup on a sunny Wednesday afternoon. Before the game, the senior athletes were honored, and they shined during the game, leading to a 13-1 win for the Cougars.

The Cougars bats were hot early, having two innings where they scored five plus runs. Leading the offense was Alexa Bertelsmann, going 2-2 with a standup double and a home run blasted over deep center.

Academy head coach Todd Kurtz was proud of his teams offensive performance. “They came out and hit the ball well,” said Kurtz. “They backed that up with defense, and showed what we’re capable of doing.”

While the offense may have been the story of the game, pitcher Haley Elliot shutdown the Eagle offense, allowing only four hits and one run for the entire game. Kurtz is never surprised whenever Elliot does well on the mound.

“Anytime she’s on the mound she steps up and does her job,” said Kurtz. “When the defense makes plays for her and she gets hot, she’s trouble.”

The Cougars would cruise to a 13-1 win, and look towards several key district games in the coming days. While Academy may not be one of the top seeds in the district now, Kurtz has nothing but confidence in his squad.

“They can win any game we play,” said Kurtz. “They truly can, they just have to know they can. They are so much better than what they think they are.”
